History and Foundation

St Catharine's College began as Katharine Hall in 1473 when Robert Woodlark, Provost of King's College, assembled land and secured a royal charter from Edward IV in 1475. The original foundation supported a master and a small number of fellows studying theology and philosophy. Undergraduates entered from the sixteenth century. In the seventeenth century the college acquired the George Inn and redeveloped the site into the present three-sided court completed by 1757. The nineteenth century brought a new chapel in 1704 and a shift in orientation toward Trumpington Street. Women were admitted in 1979.

Physical Setting and Architecture

The college occupies a medium-scale site in Cambridge's historic core between King's College and Corpus Christi College. Its brick ranges with stone dressings and tiled roofs enclose an open Main Court that faces the street, an arrangement unique among Oxbridge colleges. Sherlock Court and later additions such as the McGrath Centre and dining hall complete the layout. Paved courts dominate the outdoor space while lawns remain out of bounds. The chapel interior provides the principal indoor space open to visitors.

Visitors arrive at the Porters' Lodge on Trumpington Street, receive a site map, and proceed through the Main Court. The chapel door stays open throughout the day, allowing entry to view the interior and seating. Public services occur on weekdays and choral services several times weekly. The visit proceeds at a measured pace through accessible courts and the chapel. Student activity continues around the site, yet the courts retain a calm, ordered character distinct from larger neighbouring colleges.

Access and Practical Details

The college lies a few minutes' walk from King's Parade and Market Square. Walking or cycling provides the most direct approach. From Cambridge station the walk takes about 25 minutes or a short Universal U bus ride to Silver Street. Taxis drop off directly outside the lodge. On-site parking is limited to drop-off; visitors use nearby public car parks or Park & Ride. Level entrances and automated gates serve the main site. Some historic steps remain; chapel rear access requires prior arrangement.

Facilities and Duration

The Porters' Lodge supplies information and first-aid support. Four wheelchair-accessible toilets are available on site. Benches and shelter exist in the courts and chapel. No entry fee applies for viewing the courts and chapel. A realistic visit occupies 15 to 60 minutes. Food and drink for casual visitors are not provided on site; options lie within a five-minute walk in the city centre.
