The Calling, Cambridge Travel Guide

The Calling is a recurring monthly club night that has operated since the mid-1990s. It presents DJ sets of gothic, EBM, industrial, 80s and darkwave music to a dedicated local audience. The night takes place on the first Friday of each month inside the back room of The Blue Moon, a craft-beer pub on Norfolk Street in the Petersfield area. Music runs from roughly 19:00 to 23:00; visitors may remain in the main bar area afterwards. Entry is free, with donations accepted at the door.

The Blue Moon occupies a typical inner-Cambridge terraced building with a front bar, additional indoor seating and a small outdoor seating area. The Calling uses a compact back room that holds a modest number of dancers. The space is entirely indoor, with no scenic views or distinctive architecture. The former Q Club premises near the railway station, once the event’s home, closed permanently and no longer functions as a venue.

Arrivals begin around 19:00–19:30. The room fills gradually with regulars who dance, talk and move between the back room and the main bar. The atmosphere stays social and low-pressure rather than intensely club-oriented. Sound levels suit conversation between tracks. The crowd spans a wide adult age range within the local alternative scene; the event does not target tourists or families.

From Cambridge city centre the pub lies roughly one mile away, a 15–25 minute walk or cycle along ordinary streets. Buses serve East Road and Mill Road corridors with short onward walks. Taxis and rideshares reach the door quickly and cheaply. Street parking is limited; the former pub car park now contains outdoor tables. The site presents no physical barriers for most visitors and carries no seasonal access restrictions.

The building provides toilets, an extensive bar serving craft beer, gin and other drinks, and a pizza kitchen. Drinking water is available from the bar. There is seating indoors and outdoors, but no lockers, visitor centre or picnic facilities. Information about dates and any changes circulates via the organiser’s social media rather than on-site signage. The venue describes itself as a safe space and welcomes LGBTQ visitors.

A realistic visit lasts three to five hours, covering the music window plus time in the pub. Spending centres on drinks at standard Cambridge pub prices. The indoor setting means weather has little effect on attendance or operation. Numbers remain modest and consistent year-round, composed mainly of local regulars rather than visitors from outside the city.
