Holehird Gardens lies on a 12-acre hillside estate near Windermere, Cumbria, and has been nurtured by the Lakeland Horticultural Society since 1971. The estate’s origins date back to the 19th century when the present Walled Garden was constructed in 1885 by Manchester industrialist John Macmillan Dunlop. The garden features heated Victorian-style glasshouses originally designed to cultivate vines, peach trees, and orchids. The grounds were later enhanced by the renowned landscape architect Thomas Mawson, who expanded the walled garden in 1898, giving it a distinctive historic charm that blends formal design with natural Lakeland beauty.

The gardens are celebrated for their rich botanical variety, including alpine and heather beds, extensive rhododendron and azalea collections, and herbaceous borders bursting with seasonal color. Notably, Holehird holds six National Plant Collections, including astilbes, polystichum ferns, and hydrangeas, making it a vital resource for plant conservation and horticultural enthusiasts. The glasshouses near the visitor reception showcase alpine plants and other rare species, offering a glimpse into the garden’s dedication to plant diversity and education.

The garden encourages donations to support its upkeep, with a suggested minimum donation of £6 per adult. Guided walks led by knowledgeable volunteers are available weekly during the warmer months, enriching the visitor experience with expert insights.

The gardens have a rich cultural heritage, having been part of the Holehird Estate, which was gifted to the people of Windermere in the mid-20th century.
