Legacy of a Grand Gothic Mansion

Lowther Castle was completed in 1812 as one of the finest Gothic mansions in northwest England. It boasted a room for every day of the year and was a social hub for the British elite for over a century. However, the upheavals of the 20th century led to its abandonment in 1936, military occupation during wartime, and partial demolition in 1957. For decades, only the façade and outer walls remained, with the castle grounds overtaken by wilderness.

Revival and Garden Restoration

Since opening to the public in 2012, Lowther Castle has undergone extensive restoration. The ruins have been stabilized and planted with gardens growing within the old walls, creating a unique 'Garden-in-the-Ruins.' The grounds combine ancient woodlands, historic terraces dating back to the 17th century, and contemporary garden designs such as the woolly yew hedges of the Parterre and the fragrant Rose Garden by Dan Pearson. These layers of garden history offer a rich, sensory experience.

Family-Friendly Adventure and Facilities

The estate includes one of the UK’s largest adventure playgrounds, the Lost Castle, featuring zipwires, slides, ropes, and sandpits suitable for all ages. Visitors can also enjoy a café serving freshly made food, a shop, picnic areas, and cycle hire. The site is mostly wheelchair accessible, pet friendly (dogs on leads), and provides accessible parking and facilities for children.

Scenic Setting within the Lake District

Situated on the dramatic Knipe Scar, Lowther Castle offers far-reaching views over the River Lowther and the valley below. The location lies on the northern edge of the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, blending natural beauty with historic charm. The surrounding parkland and woodlands invite exploration and provide a tranquil escape in a renowned landscape.

Visitor Experience and Practical Information

Open daily year-round except Christmas Day, the castle and gardens welcome visitors from 10am to 5pm in summer and 10am to 4pm in winter, with last entry one hour before closing. Tickets are available online, with options for adults, children, families, and annual passes. Parking is modestly priced and free for annual passholders. The site is non-smoking and discourages scooters and bikes within the gardens for safety.

Enduring Heritage and Community Engagement

The same family has owned the estate for over 850 years, and the site’s history is celebrated through exhibitions and storytelling throughout the grounds. Lowther Castle & Gardens is also engaged with the community and garden enthusiasts, recently shortlisted for the Historic Houses Garden of the Year award, highlighting the dedication of its gardening team and the evolving beauty of this historic site.
