Chester Town Hall stands as a testament to the city’s enduring civic spirit, replacing an earlier exchange building that was destroyed by fire in 1862. The current hall was designed by Belfast architect William Henry Lynn and completed in 1869, officially opened by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. The entrance is grandly approached by opposing flights of steps, and the facade is adorned with four Bath stone sculptures illustrating key episodes from Chester’s history. This blend of medieval motifs with Victorian craftsmanship creates an imposing yet elegant civic landmark.

Inside, the Town Hall houses a large assembly room, a courtroom for city quarter sessions, and on the first floor, a council chamber, mayoral suite, and committee rooms. The council chamber was rebuilt following a devastating fire in 1897 under the supervision of architect T. M. Lockwood. Rich wood paneling and detailed stone and wooden carvings enhance the interiors, while the Lord Mayoral suite includes the Lord Mayor’s Parlour and the Mayoress’ Parlour. Panels in the committee room honor the city’s mayors, sheriffs, earls, clerks, and recorders, chronicling centuries of local governance.

Though no longer serving as the administrative headquarters, Chester Town Hall remains a vibrant venue for weddings, conferences, and special events. It occasionally opens its doors for public tours, offering visitors a glimpse into its architectural splendor and historical significance.
