Ebrington Square: A Historic and Vibrant Riverside Plaza in Londonderry

From Military Stronghold to Cultural Heart

Ebrington Square occupies the historic site of Ebrington Barracks, a military base established in 1841 shaped as a star fort. The site played pivotal roles in major conflicts, including the Siege of Derry in 1689 and both World Wars, serving as a key repair and refueling base for Allied warships during the Battle of the Atlantic. The barracks were home to British Army soldiers during the Troubles, with over 1,000 stationed at its peak. In 2003, the site was officially handed over to the people of Londonderry, symbolizing peace and reconciliation.

Regeneration and Public Space Transformation

After decades as a military site, Ebrington Square was regenerated and opened to the public on 14 February 2012. The former parade ground was resurfaced and transformed into a welcoming plaza that hosts a variety of open-air events, from cultural festivals to markets and concerts. The site is surrounded by preserved 19th-century buildings now repurposed as restaurants, cafes, offices, and a multi-award-winning brew house, blending history with contemporary urban life.

Art and Architectural Highlights

Adjacent to the square lies Mute Meadow, an art installation of 40 pairs of illuminated columns inspired by the stained glass of the Guildhall windows, though its lights have been off since 2014. The square itself is connected to Londonderry’s city center by the Peace Bridge, a graceful pedestrian and cycle bridge that spans the River Foyle, symbolizing unity between the Waterside and the historic walled city. The star fort walls and listed buildings around the site add a distinctive heritage character to the area.

A Hub for Community and Culture

Ebrington Square is a lively gathering place where locals and tourists enjoy dining, socializing, and cultural events. It hosts speciality markets, night markets, and commemorative events such as the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic surrender, featuring living history reenactments and live music. The Peace Pledge Tree and interactive historical maps enrich visitors’ understanding of the site’s significance.
