A Sanctuary for Scotland’s Largest Land Mammal

The Red Deer Range was created in 1977 within Galloway Forest Park to provide a safe haven for red deer and a chance for visitors to see these iconic animals up close in a natural setting. Approximately 25 red deer roam freely here, including impressive stags and graceful hinds. The range is carefully managed to maintain the wellbeing of the herd while allowing people to observe without disturbing their natural behaviors.

Visitor Experience and Facilities

Visitors can watch the deer from a dedicated viewing area and a weather-protected hide, which offers shelter and excellent vantage points. The hide is situated near a feeding station attracting not only deer but also a variety of woodland and moorland birds. The site is accessible year-round, with free parking available during the day. A smaller upper car park provides direct access to the viewing facilities via a short but steep walk. Visitors are encouraged to bring carrots or apples to feed the deer, enhancing the interactive experience.

Wildlife Beyond the Deer

While the red deer are the stars of the range, the area is also rich in other wildlife. Birdwatchers can spot buzzards and other birds of prey soaring above the hills. The feeding station near the hide attracts diverse bird species, making the range a rewarding spot for nature enthusiasts. Access and Practical Information

The range is located on the north side of the A712 (The Queen’s Way), between Newton Stewart and New Galloway. The larger lower car park requires a short but steep walk to the hide, while the upper car park offers more direct access. Entry to the Red Deer Range is free, and the site is open every day, all year round. Overnight parking is not permitted except under the Stay the Night scheme for self-contained motorhomes, which requires a small fee.

Respecting the Wildlife

Visitors are reminded that dogs are not allowed near the hides to avoid disturbing the deer. The range encourages responsible wildlife watching to ensure the animals remain comfortable and safe. The peaceful atmosphere and natural surroundings create a tranquil environment for all who visit.
