Penicuik Estate has been under the stewardship of the Clerk family since 1654, when the merchant John Clerk purchased the land and barony of Penicuik. Over successive generations, the family has cultivated a remarkable legacy, shaping the estate into a beacon of Scottish heritage. The estate became a hub of the Scottish Enlightenment, with the 2nd and 3rd baronets, Sir John Clerk and Sir James Clerk, making significant contributions to architecture, landscape design, and cultural life.

The centerpiece, Penicuik House, was constructed between 1761 and 1769 by Sir James Clerk, inspired by Italian Palladian architecture. This grand mansion featured a striking ashlar façade, a central hexastyle portico, and elegant Palladian windows. Despite being gutted by fire in 1899, the ruins have been preserved and stabilized, showcasing the estate's historic architectural significance. The adjacent stable block, converted into a mansion after the fire, remains a key feature with its Italianate courtyard, clocktower, and domed dovecote modeled on a Roman temple.

The estate's landscape is a masterpiece of early designed landscapes in Scotland, with over 300,000 trees planted in the early 18th century by Sir John Clerk. The grounds include 12 hectares of parkland, rolling hills, and 20 kilometers of trails that invite exploration. The estate is committed to regenerative farming, woodland creation, and peatland restoration, reflecting a modern dedication to sustainability and biodiversity.

Today, Penicuik Estate is undergoing an ambitious transformation under Ed Clerk, the current custodian. The estate is evolving into a regenerative business that connects visitors to nature and heritage. Plans include exclusive-use accommodations in the restored Penicuik House and cottages, wellness experiences such as yoga and wild swimming, and new glass-fronted cabins inspired by Scandinavian design. The estate balances its rich history with contemporary design and environmental stewardship.
