Origins of a Pioneering Ladies' Golf Club

The St Andrews Ladies' Putting Club was founded in 1867, originally known as the St Andrews Ladies Golf Club. It emerged from the desire of local women, many related to members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, to have their own dedicated putting green. Before this, women played on a small caddies’ putting area near what is now the Rusacks Hotel, which caused friction with the caddies. Recognizing the need for a separate space, the club was established with Mrs Robert Todd Boothby as President and Miss Ellen Boothby as Vice President.

The Himalayas Course: A Unique Putting Experience

The course, affectionately called "The Himalayas" due to its distinctive peaks and troughs, was laid out by the legendary Old Tom Morris, a four-time Open champion and greenkeeper at St Andrews. Originally a 15-hole miniature links, it was designed to be played with a cleek and putter, gradually evolving into the current 9 and 18-hole formats. The terrain features dramatic undulations that challenge players of all levels, making it one of the most entertaining putting courses worldwide.

Historic Traditions and Competitions

The club held its first competition in 1867, a 45-hole event with prizes including a gold locket and silver pebble brooch, which remain cherished trophies today. Membership grew rapidly, reaching hundreds by the early 20th century, including both ladies and gentlemen associates. The club has maintained a strong tradition of competitions and social events, with monthly medals and weekly tournaments held during the warmer months.

Course Features and Setting

Nestled between the first hole of the Old Course and the first tee of the New Course, the Himalayas putting green is surrounded by historic golf landmarks. The course includes an old fishermen’s path known as “Jordan,” now surfaced but still a notable feature that runs through the putting area. The clubhouse, replaced in 1999, provides modern facilities while preserving the club’s rich heritage.

Legacy and Modern-Day Experience

Today, the club continues as a ladies-only institution, welcoming visitors aged six and above for a nominal fee. It remains a beloved part of St Andrews’ golfing landscape, offering an accessible and historic putting experience. The club’s connection to Old Tom Morris and its status as the world’s oldest ladies’ golf club make it a unique destination for golf enthusiasts and history lovers alike.

Connection to St Andrews Golf Heritage

The Ladies' Putting Club complements the wider St Andrews Links complex, known as the "Home of Golf," which includes seven renowned courses such as the Old Course. The club’s location on the Links places it at the heart of golf’s rich history, offering visitors a chance to engage with a pioneering chapter in the sport’s development while enjoying the scenic and challenging putting terrain.
