The Gathering Place is a striking public artwork located along the iconic River Ness in Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands. Conceived by the creative collaboration of Sans Façon and KHBT architects, this installation is more than a sculptural landmark—it is a thoughtful gesture that reconnects the city with its river. The design features a gently curving platform that extends into the river, transforming from a bench to a pathway, a viewing platform, and finally a pier-like structure. Its tactile, sweeping forms engage visitors with the water’s edge and the surrounding natural landscape, inviting reflection and interaction.

Local Materials and Craftsmanship Rooted in Place

Constructed from Clashach stone, a material sourced regionally, The Gathering Place emphasizes locality and community. The stone’s natural texture and color harmonize with the Highland environment, reinforcing a sense of belonging and place. The project was built by Simpson Builders, a Beauly-based company just a few miles from Inverness, further embedding local craftsmanship into the artwork. This use of native materials and regional expertise underscores the installation’s role as a cultural and environmental bridge between the city and its natural surroundings.
