A Monument Born of Norfolk Pride

Nelson's Monument stands as a towering tribute to Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, Norfolk's celebrated naval hero. Conceived during Nelson's lifetime but completed after his death in 1819, it was funded by public subscription and designed by architect William Wilkins. The monument rises 44 metres (144 feet) on the Denes area of Great Yarmouth, originally open land near the River Yare. It was the first Nelson column built, preceding London's famous Trafalgar Square monument by 24 years. The column is supported by six caryatid figures and adorned with gilded dolphins, victories, a galley, and oars. At the base, inscriptions honor Nelson’s four major victories: The Nile, Copenhagen, St Vincent, and Trafalgar, with the names of his ships displayed on the plinth.

Historical Connections and Keeper's Legacy

The first custodian was James Sharman, a former able seaman from Norfolk who served on HMS Victory and is said to have helped carry the fatally wounded Nelson below deck at Trafalgar. Sharman tended the monument for nearly 50 years and became a local legend, inspiring the character Ham Peggotty in Charles Dickens’ "David Copperfield". The monument’s history is also marked by dramatic incidents, including a fatal fall of an acrobat from Britannia’s shoulders and the collapse of the town surveyor during its construction.

Visitors can climb the 217 spiral steps inside the hollow column to reach the viewing platform, which offers sweeping panoramic views of Great Yarmouth, the North Sea, and the surrounding countryside. The ascent requires good fitness and is limited to small groups at a time due to space constraints. The monument is situated within an industrial estate, which contrasts with its historic grandeur and can detract somewhat from the atmosphere. Benches and a grassed area surround the base, and information plaques—including one in Braille—provide historical context.
