Historic Roots and Evolution

Founded in 1974 as the North East Vintage and Veteran Aircraft Association, the museum evolved over decades into the North East Land, Sea and Air Museums (NELSAM). It occupies the former RAF Usworth and Sunderland Airport site, a location steeped in aviation history. The museum's growth reflects its expanding collections, incorporating military vehicles, aero engines, and transport artifacts, celebrating over 50 years of preservation and volunteer dedication.

Expansive Collections and Iconic Exhibits

NELSAM's exhibits span land, sea, and air transport history. Over 40 full aircraft are displayed in purpose-built hangars and Romney huts, including rare and historic planes. The outdoor grounds feature the impressive Avro Vulcan B.2 bomber, a Cold War relic with a striking delta wing design, which was the first Vulcan to enter private ownership. The Hawk T1 jet, used by the RAF’s Red Arrows display team, is among the newer additions, symbolizing the museum’s ongoing commitment to aviation heritage.

Immersive Visitor Experiences

Beyond static displays, NELSAM offers interactive and immersive experiences, such as a World War II street scene complete with replica shopfronts and searchlights. The museum also highlights the history of the 607 Squadron, once based at RAF Usworth, providing context to the region’s military contributions.
