Chapelfield Gardens holds the distinction of being Norwich's earliest surviving ornamental public open space, with documented public use dating back to 1655. Established formally in 1880, the gardens occupy land with deep historical roots. The site takes its name from the Chapel of St Mary in the Fields, which once stood here before its destruction during the dissolution of the monasteries in 1545. Medieval remnants of Norwich's city walls, begun in 1297, still border the gardens today, creating a tangible connection to the city's medieval past. Over centuries, this triangular plot served various purposes—from jousting fields in the 15th century to grazing land and archery butts in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The gardens were designed by George Alden Stevens and feature a distinctive triangular layout bordered by Chapel Field North, Chapel Field East, and Chapel Field Road. The space encompasses generous green lawns, magnificent flower beds, and several architectural features. A timber bandstand, positioned 70 metres from the north-east corner entrance, serves as a focal point for events and concerts. A brick and tile refreshment shelter sits 30 metres north-west of the bandstand, while a refreshment pavilion occupies the north-west corner. Four pedestrian entrances provide access, including one via a subway under the inner ring road from Chapel Field Road. The gardens also feature a notable wooden sculpture titled "Will Kemp and His Morris Men," commissioned in 2000 to mark Queen Elizabeth II's jubilee.

Visitors can enjoy a children's playground where young ones can burn off energy, expansive open lawns perfect for picnics and relaxation, and carefully maintained flower beds. Refreshment options range from a small food stand offering coffee, snacks, and ice cream to a larger restaurant for sit-down meals. The pavilion tea room provides a pleasant spot to rest beside the striking wooden sculpture. Toilet facilities and seating areas are available throughout the gardens, making it accessible for families with young children and elderly visitors.

Chapelfield Gardens functions as a vibrant cultural venue, hosting the Norfolk & Norwich Festival—the UK's oldest independent arts festival—along with numerous community events. The gardens have been central to Norwich Pride celebrations since 2009, with the 2023 event centring in the park. The bandstand regularly hosts concerts and performances, while the open spaces accommodate the city centre's iconic 10k run and other major gatherings. This combination of peaceful green space and event venue makes it equally suitable for quiet contemplation or lively celebration.
