Historical Foundations
In 1776, the parishes of Mitford and Launditch established a House of Industry on Chapel Farm at Gressenhall to support the rural poor. This red-brick complex, completed in 1777, housed up to 670 inmates by 1801, offering work in spinning, wool dressing, and farming amid economic hardships from protectionist policies and the Industrial Revolution. The Workhouse Era
The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act reshaped it into the Mitford and Launditch Union Workhouse, enforcing separation of men, women, and children to deter reliance. Inmates endured stone-breaking, oakum-picking, laundry, and kitchen duties in austere conditions designed to be unappealing. Despite hardships, children received basic education, and healthcare was provided. The site operated until 1948, later serving as elderly housing before becoming a museum in 1976.Museum of Norfolk Rural Life
Today, Gressenhall spans 50 acres, featuring galleries with the nation's largest Victorian workhouse collection. Interactive exhibits recreate inmate life, from segregated wards to punishment cells. The Museum of Norfolk Life showcases agricultural evolution through massive harvesting machines, steam engines, and stories of rural poverty juxtaposed with innovation.Working Farm and Grounds
A traditional farm highlights rare breeds, including majestic Suffolk Punch horses. Stroll wildlife-rich woodlands and river paths, or let children unleash energy at the adventure playground. Outbuildings like a schoolroom, blacksmith, cottage, and post office immerse visitors in bygone rural existence.Visitor Experience
Daily from 10am to 5pm, the site offers a cafe with homemade quiche, picnic deals, and indoor/outdoor seating. Tranquil grounds invite picnics amid unspoilt beauty, making it an ideal day out blending somber history with lively farmyard charm.More to explore near Gressenhall Farm & Workhouse
