Discover more about The Kelso Pottery
Origins and Artistic Vision
Founded in 1970 by Ian and Elizabeth Hird, both graduates of Edinburgh College of Art, The Kelso Pottery has become a celebrated name in the Scottish Borders for its handcrafted ceramics. Ian specializes in domestic stoneware fired at high temperatures (1300°C), producing mugs, jugs, bowls, plates, vases, and baking dishes. These pieces are richly decorated with impressions inspired by the ever-changing colors and light of the Border landscape, capturing the natural beauty of the region. Elizabeth complements this with her unique creations combining throwing and hand-building techniques to craft animals, birds, and figures, adding a whimsical and artistic dimension to the collection. Together, their work reflects a deep connection to the local environment and artistic heritage.Innovative Firing Techniques and Unique Pieces
In 1988, Ian designed and built an outdoor pit kiln incorporating firing methods from Portugal, Japan, Korea, and Crete. This kiln is used for a special range called “Time Tablets,” low-temperature fired pieces (1100°C) impressed with natural materials such as oats, barley, reeds, and bracken, alongside designs spanning from prehistoric times to the present day. Before firing, each piece is wrapped in straw or grains, which smothers and traps ash during firing, creating unpredictable and unique surface patterns known as “flashing.” This blend of deliberate decoration and serendipitous effects ensures every item is truly one of a kind.A Welcoming Space in Kelso
Situated opposite the Knowes Car Park on the road to the garden centre, The Kelso Pottery offers a charming and accessible retail space with a new sales area featuring disabled access. The shop operates from Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and is a perfect destination for visitors seeking authentic Scottish pottery. Admission is free, and the shop is a delightful place to find gifts, souvenirs, or simply appreciate local craftsmanship.Community and Visitor Engagement
The Kelso Pottery is not only a retail venue but also a cultural hub that occasionally hosts Senior Citizen days and pottery workshops, inviting visitors to engage with the craft hands-on. Visitors are encouraged to inquire about the stories behind each piece, deepening their appreciation of the artistry and tradition involved.Setting and Surroundings
Kelso itself is a picturesque town in the Scottish Borders, and The Kelso Pottery adds to its cultural fabric by offering a unique artisan experience. Nearby attractions include antique centers, boutiques, and a variety of dining options, making it an excellent stop for a day trip or weekend getaway. The shop’s location amidst scenic surroundings enhances the tranquil and inspiring atmosphere for visitors.Legacy and Continuing Craftsmanship
The Kelso Pottery stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of handmade ceramics rooted in local tradition yet enriched by global influences. The Hirids’ dedication to quality, innovation, and connection to the natural world continues to attract collectors and admirers, ensuring the pottery remains a vibrant part of Kelso’s cultural heritage.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
