Nestled on a gentle hillside in Aberdeenshire, Craigievar Castle enchants visitors with its iconic pink harled exterior, said to have inspired Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle. Construction began in the late 16th century and was completed around 1626 by William Forbes, whose merchant wealth is reflected in the elegant yet fortified design. The castle’s exterior has remained virtually unchanged for nearly 400 years, standing as one of Scotland’s best-preserved examples of Scottish Baronial architecture.

Craigievar was a family home until the 1960s, allowing it to retain an extraordinary level of original features and contents. Guided tours, limited to small groups, lead visitors through five floors filled with intricate wood paneling, ornate plaster ceilings, and rare period furnishings. The castle’s interiors emphasize comfort and domesticity over defense, with a unique blend of elegant family living and subtle defensive architectural flourishes. Notable artifacts include original portraits by Sir Henry Raeburn, complete with signed receipts, and a rare Jacobean Great Hall showcasing exquisite woodwork.

Surrounding the castle are extensive parklands and woodland trails open year-round from dawn to dusk. The grounds feature a Victorian kitchen garden, a Scottish glen garden, and two waymarked woodland paths. In early summer, the forest floor glows with bluebells, while wildlife such as red squirrels and pine martens can often be spotted. The peaceful setting makes the grounds ideal for picnics or a relaxing afternoon immersed in nature.

Tours of the castle run approximately every 30 to 45 minutes during opening hours and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of 10 people per tour. Advance booking is not available, so early arrival is recommended, especially during peak season. Photography is prohibited inside to protect the delicate interiors. The castle has no artificial lighting beyond the ground floor, so tours rely on natural daylight, enhancing the authentic historical atmosphere.

Craigievar Castle is cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, which recently completed the 'Pink Again' project to restore the castle’s distinctive pink harling and improve protection of its fabric and interiors. This conservation work ensures that the castle’s unique charm and historical integrity will endure for future generations to appreciate.

While the grounds are accessible year-round, the castle itself has many steep spiral staircases and no wheelchair access. Facilities include a small shop and kiosk, but there is no on-site café or restaurant. Parking is available for a fee near the entrance. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the peaceful grounds and woodland trails, which offer a scenic and tranquil complement to the castle experience.
