Historic Origins of Prittlewell Priory
Prittlewell Priory dates back to the early 12th century when it was established by the Cluniac Order as a cell of the Priory of St Pancras in Lewes, East Sussex. This small monastery housed no more than 18 monks and played a modest but significant role in the religious landscape of medieval Essex. The priory endured the upheavals of the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII in the 16th century, after which much of the original structure was destroyed or altered.
