The Golden Rule stands as one of Ambleside’s oldest pubs, dating back to approximately 1683. Its stone structure incorporates materials scavenged from the nearby Galava Roman Fort, lending it a unique historical foundation. Originally serving as the brewery house for Ambleside Hall, it transitioned into a public house in the early 18th century. Over the past century, it was owned by Hartley’s Brewery before becoming part of the Robinsons Brewery portfolio in 1982. The current licensee has maintained the pub’s traditional character for over three decades, preserving its authentic atmosphere amidst the evolving landscape of modern hospitality.

Unlike contemporary gastro-pubs or lively bars, the Golden Rule offers a quiet, unpretentious environment where patrons can enjoy a pint and a chat without distractions like loud music or televised sports. The pub’s interior features multiple rooms with fixed bench seating and real fires, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.
