As you reach the left side of the square, continue walking straight until you see a large set of stairs leading up to the Apostolic Palace, which is located directly behind the Basilica. The entrance is marked and generally has guards present. Make sure to follow the pathway that leads directly to the palace, ensuring you're moving towards the Vatican Museums area.
