History of Okemo Mountain Resort

A Working Vermont Landscape

The hills around present-day Ludlow were shaped for centuries by forest, farming and small-scale settlement before becoming a major ski destination. Ludlow developed as a village connected to the wider region by agriculture, timber and local industry, while the surrounding Green Mountain terrain remained predominantly rural. The landscape's combination of accessible slopes, woodland and valley settlement later made it suitable for recreational development without losing its connection to an established Vermont community.

The Founding of Okemo

Okemo opened as a ski area in 1956, when a small group of local investors led by Sel Hannah developed skiing on the mountain above Ludlow. Its creation formed part of the post-war expansion of skiing in Vermont, as improved roads, rising car ownership and growing interest in winter sport brought visitors to mountain communities. The resort's name refers to Chief Okemo, a nineteenth-century leader associated with the neighbouring town of Mount Holly, although the resort itself is located in Ludlow.

Expansion and Four-Season Development

Over subsequent decades, Okemo expanded its lift network, trail system, snowmaking and base-area facilities, evolving from a local ski hill into a substantial resort serving visitors from across the north-eastern United States. Development extended to Jackson Gore on the mountain's south-western side and increasingly included summer recreation, accommodation and family activities. These changes reflected a wider shift in Vermont tourism, with mountain resorts seeking to remain useful beyond the winter season while working within a heavily forested rural environment.

Modern Resort Ownership

Okemo became part of the larger mountain-resort company operated by Triple Peaks before joining Vail Resorts in 2018, alongside Mount Sunapee and Crested Butte. The change connected Okemo with a national resort network and broader season-pass and marketing programmes, while day-to-day visitor experiences continued to centre on the mountain, its two principal base areas and Ludlow. Modern operations combine snowmaking, grooming, lift-served recreation and environmental management with the practical challenge of maintaining a large tourism business in a small Vermont community.
