Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, start from any location within Shenandoah National Park. Navigate to Skyline Drive, which runs the length of the park. If you are coming from the north, enter the park at the Front Royal Entrance. If you are coming from the south, enter at the Rockfish Gap Entrance. Once on Skyline Drive, head south towards Mile Marker 56. Bearfence Mountain is located near Mile Marker 56. Look for the Bearfence Mountain trailhead parking area on the right side of the road. There is no entrance fee for the park, but be aware that parking at trailheads can fill up quickly, especially on weekends.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options directly into Shenandoah National Park are limited. The closest major bus station is in Harrisonburg, VA. From there, you would need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to a park entrance, such as the Swift Run Gap Entrance or Rockfish Gap Entrance. After entering the park, follow the directions for driving as described above. Note that rideshare services can incur additional costs, typically around $20-$50 depending on the distance.

• Hiking

  If you are already in the park and have parked at the Bearfence Mountain trailhead, prepare for a short but steep hike to the summit. The Bearfence Mountain trail is about 1 mile long and is rated as moderate. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water. The trail includes a rock scramble, so be cautious if you are not comfortable with climbing over rocks. The views from the top are worth the effort!
