Car
If you are traveling by car along Skyline Drive, ensure you are within the Shenandoah National Park. Begin at the Thornton Gap Entrance Station located at Milepost 31.5. Drive south along Skyline Drive for approximately 15 miles until you reach Milepost 46. There, you will find the parking area for Rapidan Camp. The entrance to the camp is about a 0.5-mile walk from the parking area, so be prepared for a short hike. Make sure to have a National Park Pass if required, as there may be a fee for entry.
Hiking
If you prefer hiking, there are designated trails leading to Rapidan Camp from various points along Skyline Drive. The most popular route is the Mill Prong Trail. Starting from the parking area at Milepost 46, follow the Mill Prong Trail, which is a moderate hike of about 2 miles. The trail is well-marked and takes you through beautiful forested areas. Please note that you should wear appropriate hiking shoes and carry water, as the hike can take approximately 1-2 hours one way.
Public Transportation
Currently, there are limited public transportation options directly to Rapidan Camp. If you are relying on public transit, consider taking a bus to nearby towns such as Luray or Front Royal. From there, you would need to arrange for a taxi or a rideshare service to get to the Thornton Gap Entrance Station on Skyline Drive. Once at the entrance, you can follow the same instructions for driving to reach Rapidan Camp.
