Getting there

Car

If you are traveling by car, start from Livingstone, the main city in Southern Province. Take the Mosi-O-Tunya Road (A8) heading north towards the town of Kabwe. Continue on the A8 until you reach the junction for the Great North Road (A1). Turn right onto the A1 and continue driving for approximately 300 kilometers until you reach the town of Mpika. From Mpika, turn onto the road heading east towards Chilubi Island. Keep in mind that the last segment of the journey will involve navigating through rural roads, so be prepared for potential rough terrain. You will then reach the ferry terminal at the shores of Lake Bangweulu. The ferry to Chilubi Island operates periodically, so check the schedule in advance. The ferry fare is approximately $5 per person.

Public Transportation

To reach Chilubi Island using public transportation, you can take a bus from Livingstone to Mpika. Buses leave frequently from the main bus station, and the fare is around 150 ZMW (Zambian Kwacha). The journey takes about 6-8 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Once you arrive in Mpika, take a taxi or local minibus to the ferry terminal at Lake Bangweulu. The fare for the taxi is about 50 ZMW. After reaching the ferry terminal, purchase a ticket for the ferry to Chilubi Island, which costs around $5 per person.
