Car Travel
From Harare, take the A5 road heading towards Kadoma. Continue on the A5 until you reach the junction with the A2 highway. Take the A2 towards Bulawayo. Drive for approximately 200 kilometers until you reach the town of Kariba. From Kariba, follow the signs to Matusadona National Park. The entrance to the park is about 30 kilometers from the town. Upon entering the park, follow the park roads to Fothergill Island, which is located within the park. Note that you may need to pay an entrance fee to Matusadona National Park, typically around $15 per person.
Public Transportation
From Harare, take a bus to Kariba. There are several bus companies that operate this route. The journey may take around 4-5 hours. Once you arrive in Kariba, hire a local taxi or arrange for a pickup to get to the entrance of Matusadona National Park. Make sure to confirm the fare beforehand; it may cost around $20 to $30. After reaching the park entrance, you will need to pay an entrance fee, and then you can either continue by taxi or arrange a boat transfer to Fothergill Island.
Boat Transfer
Once you arrive at Matusadona National Park, access to Fothergill Island is primarily by boat. If you are staying at a lodge on the island, check if they provide boat transfers from the mainland. Alternatively, you may hire a local boat for around $50 to $100, depending on the distance and duration of the trip. Make sure to negotiate the price and confirm your return journey as well.
