My friend and I are from the U.S. and hired Richard to show us birds of the Mindo Cloud Forest. I am an ornithologist and she is a school teacher who has never been birding. Despite our major differences in our skills levels, Richard was able to accommodate us both. He is an excellent guide!!! When we met him, he immediately felt like family and was easy to get along with, fun to be around, accommodating, and really had an excellent personality overall. He taught us A LOT about the birds of Ecuador and I enjoyed every moment of exploring the cloud forest with him. Specifically, he showed us numerous elevations and habitats to maximize our ability to see a diversity of birds. I finally got to see a quetzal (golden-headed) and got some very intimate views of the cock of the rock lek. My friend learned so much, not only about birds, but also Ecuador’s culture and natural history. It was a great adventure and I would definitely like to have him as a guide again when I return to Ecuador. I plan to be back after this great experience.

Richard is a very fun and personable guide. He is very flexible and will plan your tour around your needs and interests. He also knows a lot about birds and bird photography. He can help you get the perfect shot of the birds if your interest!

Oh, this was fun!
This tour was a last-minute decision for us and we are so glad we decided to do it. Richard has an infectious passion for birds and how they interact in an ecosystem. While we saw a great number of different species (16 different hummingbirds, and 45 other species by lunch time), we also learned a lot about the cloud forest, the locals, the economy, and family dynamics. We were picked up at our hotel by a guide, and dropped off by a friend.
Logistically, we'd like to mention that Richard spoke English very well, was attentive and flexible, knew the area well, and drove in a way that kept us comfortable. (Those of you who have spent any time riding as a passenger outside of the US and Canada will know what we mean.)
If you're at all interested in a birding tour of the Mindo Cloud Forest, you can be confident that Richard will be a good choice. We couldn't have imagined a better outing.

We had a great day of birding with Richard. He knew when and where the special birds were. We saw many of the birds we were looking for, including many hummingbirds and the Cock of the Rock. We were able to see many birds in our limited time of 1 day. Richard is respectful and very friendly. I would highly recommend this company.

Richard was awesome! Not only a fun guy, but also very knowledgeable about the specialities of the cloud forest and where to find them. We got to see 70+ species in one day, including Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, Club-winged Manakin, Giant Antpitta, and even the rare Lyre-tailed Nightjar! Would definitely recommend if you're interested in finding Mindo's more uncommon birds
