    Our guide was Hugh and he was fantastic. MayaWalk tours picked us up at our San Ignacio hotel. Then met the group by their office where Hugh told us about our day and gave us some history of the cave. The ride to ATM was about an hour and most of the ride Hugh and the other guide told us about the cave and Mayans and about the area we were passing through. He was very infomative. We stopped at a little store before arriving at the cave so we could get snacks or any other supplies we needed, then it was on to the cave. We left all our items on the bus, nothing allowed in the cave. The guide has a dry pack in case you have medication or anything small that can't get wet. We geared up with our life vest and helmet with light and headed off on our hike. The first river crossing is about 3 minutes into the the hike with water up to your chest. Not too cold, but you are wet the rest of the way. After about 30 minutes we arrive at the cave and swim in. It was fun splunking through the cave. Hugh had great stroies and took his time explaining stuff, unlike some of the other guides we saw that seemed to rush people through. He helped the group navigate the cave and told them where to watch out for rocks under the water and where to put your hands and feet when climbing large rocks. We were in the cave over 3 hours then hiked back to a good lunch of chicken and rice. We all changed out of wet clothes and headed back to San Ignacio. Arrived back about 3:45 and wanted to see the iguanas at the Green Iguana Conservation Project at the San Ignacio Hotel. The shuttle driver said he would drop us off since the last tour is at 4 and it was about a .5 mile walk uphill from the office. Made it with time to spare. Highly recommend this tour!!

    Junior was an amazing tour guide! He knew just about everything on Mayan culture and had answers to every question we had. The actual caves were incredible and unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It was a 10/10 experience.

    The ATM itself is amazing and hard to fully capture in words and if you are visiting the Cayo region, it is a must-see. We went with two kids, 10 and 12, and they had a great time. Be prepared to get wet pretty much as soon as you start the 45-minute hike out (3 river crossings to get to the cave) and be wet the entire time you are in the cave. There is one section where you have to climb on top of a wet rock formation (about 6 feet high) then cross a narrow gap onto a ledge so if you aren't comfortable scrambling, then reconsider your involvement because the best part of the tour is past this crux. Critical thing to note: Absolutely nothing can be brought into the caves with you - cameras and phones are left on a bus and snacks and water (bring lots of the latter and you'll need to carry your own) are left near the cave entrance. Absolutely invest in a pair of sturdy-soled water-compatible sandals and if you don't have socks, you cannot join the tour. Be prepared to see beautiful crystalline formations, amazingly preserved artefacts, and eerie skeletal remains. My only (minor) complaint was that our guide consistently got impatient if we lagged behind even by a few feet - however, I recognize that he was trying to keep us on schedule and make sure that the spacing between tour groups didn't end up in a bottleneck in order to maximize our experience at each stop along the tour. Picnic was very basic (rice and chicken for us, vegetarian options available) but well received since you are starving by the time you end the tour. 8 hours total door-to-door from MayaWalk headquarters, transportation provided.

    This tour is incredible! We enjoyed every minute of it. Our guide, Richard Harris, was fantastic! Super knowledgeable about the culture, wildlife and many other things. All the staff was great and the provided lunch was delicious. We are in our mid 40's with teen daughters.

    This was such an interesting and once in a lifetime tour. Hugh was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about this tour. Tip: ensure you have socks (needed to walk on sacred areas), water shoes with good grip, and a change of clothes with towel).

    Taking a journey into the Maya underworld at Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) or the “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre” for one of the most enlightening, epic and unique experiences of your life. Leave the world of the living behind as you venture into the heart of the ATM Cave with your licensed guide. Recently deemed the #1 Sacred Cave destination in the world by National Geographic, the ATM cave is not only beautiful geologically with its crystalline stalactites and stalagmites, but also historically, as is a natural museum of ancient Maya artifacts, as well as a sacred burial place. This is the final resting place of “Crystal Maiden,” an ancient Maya ceremonial victim, as well as the remains of 13 other sacrificed men, women and children. Your professional guides have led government officials, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, The British High Commission and US Embassy officials into the ATM Cave. This sacrificial site is accessed by a 45 minute drive from our office in San Ignacio.

    Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve

    Here we enter the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve and park our vehicles at the ranger post. From this point on we are on foot, hiking through the jungle for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave. To access the cave we swim across a small spring- fed pool and wade into the dark underworld of the cave that allows us access the extensive underground maze of tunnels, passageways and chambers, climaxing in the ceremonial chamber housing stoneware, ceramics, the famed crystallized skeleton of the “Crystal Maiden”. We spend approximately 3 hours in the cave at the guidance of our experienced guides. We enter back into the jungle world and hike to our vehicles where we relax and enjoy a homemade picnic lunch with water and soft drinks before driving back to San Ignacio. Difficulty level: Moderate (involved some easy swimming and life jackets are provided for non-swimmers, who will also be escorted by our highly trained guide).
