What to expect
The route starts near the Arnhem Central railway statin, in front of the SPAR supermarket, and our story of the Battle of Arnhem begins. During the route, you will be provided with information in photos that have a meaning to the location you are at.
Tandartsenpraktijk St.Elisabeths Gasthuis
Before you arrive at the St. Elisabeths (former) Hospital, you've had a few other stops on the route. There is much to tell about the Utrechtsestraat, and a little bit further, you will have a great view over the South of Arnhem at the lookout point. The St. Elisabeths Hospital is one of the most iconic buildings in Arnhem, and it was of great importance during the Battle of Arnhem. Although much fighting took place around the former hospital, the hospital itself was spared due to its function.
'T Huukske
Just around the corner form the St. Elisabeth Hospital, you will find the Uruqhart House. This is the house where Major-General Urquhart took shelter. It's also a famous scene in the 'A Bridge Too Far' movie where the General is played by Sir Sean Connery.
The only old gate in the city that is left 'in tackt'. It was heavily damaged during the Battle of Arnhem but was rebuild after ww2. A true gem. Entrance to this Sable Gate is not possible, but it is definitely woth to explore the outside of the gate and take some photos. You will just pass by this gate alonf the route. If you wish to explore it some more, please do so!
This fee free museum is worth a visit if you are interested in the Battle of Arnhem history. Make your way down to level -1 for a video impression of the timeline of the Battle of Arnhem.
The end station of this Battle of Arnhem route. During the war, the crossing was bombed three times by the Dutch (1940), the Allies (1944) and the Germans (1945). Take your time to explore the bridge en remember those who fought and fell. It is just a 5-10 minute walk back to the city center, and a 20 minute walk back to the Arnhem Central Railway Station.
The experience can be subject to change due to bad weather or unforseen circumstances. We always endeavour to give you the best possible experience.
