What to expect

30 Minutes Class You will arrive to our Courtland Ghost Town Visitor Center & Turquoise Gallery where you will be greeted by one of our hosts/turquoise experts. You will be able to stay seated on our comfortable couches or around our large table as our turqoise expert brings out a variety of types of turquoise still in the host rock. You will have the opportunity to hold and inspect each item as we explain some the ways in which we can identify where the turquoise was mined by looking at the host rock and whether the turquoise contain within is likely to be of high enough quality to be used in jewelry. Next, we will teach you the basics of grading polished turquoise so you know what to look for and what to ask when buying turquoise in jewelry. You will have the opportunity to hold and inspect a variety of polished pieces of turquoise of varying quality and provenance. Maginifying glasses will be provided for you to look at the details we point on each piece. After this class, you will know the basics of turquoise identification and you will have learned to discern different grades of turquoise. You will also learn the most important questions to ask before buying turquoise.
