What to expect

During the tour, you will meet Toshifumi Imayoshi, the fifth-generation owner of Imayoshi Shoten, who is dedicated to preserving the future of the tatami industry. You will experience printing your own unique design on a tatami mat - a thin and flexible mat made from igusa (soft rush grass). Imayoshi Shoten is located in Nishi-achi area, but is not easily accessible, so visitors rarely go there. However, by joining this experience, you will be able to access this special place with transportation included. The printing experience involves rubbing dye onto a copper plate that has been prepared in advance to create the design. Kurashiki used to be a major producer of Igusa, but as lifestyles changed, most factories have been closed, except for Imayoshi's , who continues to cultivate his ownsoft Igusa, preserving the tradition and industry. This tour will give you a chance to experience his passion for igusa products and gain insight into his perspective on this craft. Try creating your original igusa mat, with its subtle nostalgic scent, by printing on it. *Please make a reservation at least five days prior to the activity date. Reservations will not be accepted after that time.
