    At the outset it should be clear that the guide Willie was exemplary in all aspects, technical skill, safety precautions and area knowledge during our entire trip. The equipment ( bikes and helmets) was of good quality and well maintained. I also write this from the perspective of someone who has ridden a mountain bike for over 10 years in a variety of terrains. My real complaint with this tour is that it was advertised as being perfect for groups of varied skill levels which is misleading and inaccurate. My partner is an average bike rider and was not prepared for the steep climb which took over an hour of continuous uphill cycling. The downhill included some technical areas that required an advanced skill level to the point my partner got off her bike and walked the majority of that portion. I give her full credit for completing the tour. The description of this tour needs to be reworked to reflect the difficulty.

    The Golden Arches mountain bike tour was one of the highlights of our time in Guatemala! We rode in the afternoon of February 26, 2020. Our guide spoke English well, was enthusiastic, fun and interactive, and shared some culture and history Antigua/Guatemala along the ride. We were fitted to bikes appropriate to our height and had time to test and adjust them. It was very overcast during our tour so we couldn’t see the volcanos very well but on a clear day this ride gives you amazing views. The first half of the ride is entirely uphill and steep, over cobble stone and dirt. You must be in very good physical shape to complete the climb portion of the ride. 2 members of our group had to give up and turn around shortly into our tour because of the difficulty of the climb. It was physically exhausting and I would probably rate it a little harder than “moderate” (come prepared with proper attire and extra water!) However, the views at the top are very rewarding! The downhill portion of the ride has some technical parts over rocks and a lot of narrow dusty/slippery tracks, you should have good mountain biking experience to attempt this ride. The most fun part of the ride is towards the end, downhill over a wide rolling dirt trail. This tour takes you right through coffee, fruit, and other farms and is a great way to get out of the town and get a different perspective of the landscape. We are so glad we decided to do this ride and would recommend to those seeking adventure in Antigua, 10/10!

    We did a morning mountain bike ride through town up to the agricultural fields of Volcán Agua. Trail had some fun and somewhat technical single-track downhill on the way back. We had such a fun and informative guide, thanks Osas!! He taught us history of the surrounding areas and all about the coffee and crop fields, such enthusiastic energy! Great exercise with some steep uphills and got to see a lot of different spots around Antigua. Would absolutely book another ride, hike, or other adventure with this group. Easy to book online especially if it’s a busier season but we preferred to stop in their shop in Antigua and we booked a ride for the next day (note not all excursions may be available if booking on shorter notice).

We’ll then bike ~45min up on trails and continue cross-country through the agricultural fields of corn, peas, the citrus nísperos, coffee and avocado trees. Traversing our way across the lower sections of Volcan de Agua will give you great views back to Antigua and the rest of the valley. We then make our way to the downhill section that brings up back to civilization, popping back out in San Pedro las Huertas. From San Pedro we’ll cruise all the way back to Antigua.
