    3 individual guided hikes throughout the park with a knowledgeable informative expert! Includes a lunch, snacks and all the water you can drink! Best way to learn and see as much as you can on a limited time frame.

    There were three hikes, one of which was a fairly difficult one. I liked that we were taken on three different hikes with all different kinds of views. However, I would probably assess the level of people’s comfortableness before committing to the crater hike. A handful of us barely made it back alive. Haha. Tours are supposed to be fun, but that trail was brutal. Lunch was bountiful and delicious. Sandwiches were great. Cookies were delicious as well. Saved the chips for later. No need to bring your own snacks or water. They have plenty for you. They even provide you with food quality hiking jackets in case it gets too cold. However, I feel like what really sets tours apart from one another are their guides. I believe guides should be talking at least sixty percent of the time. Our guide spoke about forty to fifty percent. Less than half the time. He would introduce us to the hike before starting each one. However, once we started, he immediately was on his phone for the rest of the hike. It is like he was just off on his own doing his own thing. He would tell us little fun facts here and there, but then he would be radio silent again. No efforts in getting to know us. He was great at taking awesome pictures!

    We booked the hike + summit after after a few days in Maui and luckily, found this group tour with Steven, with no other guests but us 3. The weather was clear during our visit, and the drive up and down were scenic, safe, and pleasant. The day was busy for one of the trails on our itinerary, and when Steven made several attempts to find a parking spot to no avail, he replaced that walk with another, less traveled hike / lookout spot. We didn't find any of the hikes particularly strenuous or difficult, although the hike back up the crater requires effort. We wore gym shoes and had little difficulty with the sandy, gravelly spots, although beware of your footing as it's easy to slide when going down some of the inclines. The temperature at sea level was in the 80's, but it was significantly colder at the summit and the wind was fierce. Layers and a hat are definitely useful. The Haleakala environments are polar opposites from the beaches of Maui, and we enjoyed the stark differences. A really nice beach break - with some great local insights from our guide.

    Did the morning sunrise at the summit, get to the top before 4:45 if you want a good spot and to see the amazing transition from beginning to end. It is extremely cold up there so where many layers and gloves, hat, blankets everything. It was a beautiful experience the morning we went.

    Getting to see a volcanic landscape up close is a unique experience and one that I’m glad we did! Our tour guide (Steven) is a a native Hawaiian who shared his knowledge of the rare species that exist in this unusual volcanic ecosystem. We are glad we didn’t try to do this one on our own. After driving the road to Hana ourselves, it was a treat to sit back and let somebody else take charge. It also allowed us all to focus on the beauty of the scenic drive. If you do decide to do this on your own, make sure you reserve tickets ahead of time and get up to the top as early as you can because the cloud formations come in quickly and can block some of the views. We did the 8 am tour and got to hike to the view points just before clouds started to roll on (around 11-12). It is chilly at the top so bring a jacket or sweatshirt! Our tour provided guests with warm jackets which was really great since most of us didn’t think to bring one.
