Learned a lot about hippos. Saw lots of hippo families up close, mostly underwater. Only saw two birds and one Nile crocodile.

The tour was great, we saw hippos, crocs and even and elephant. The problem was I booked and paid for a private tour. At the last minute it was changed to a 10 person group.
As with every group tour, one couple was 15 minutes late, no apologies and the woman could not have been sicker. No mask on the ride out, the guide made her put one on on the way back. She ruined the trip and never apologized for anything. I am sure we will all be sick after being in a small space with this woman for 3 hours. So rude.

Unfortunately the weather was not good this day. It started with us getting picked up 30 minutes late in rainy weather. We did see a lot of Hippos, but no crocodiles.

This was one of a number of privately arranged tours we had whilst on a Norwegian Dawn cruise.
Under African Skies were great communicators, not helped by me leaving my mobile in the car at Heathrow! Anyway, we joined our small group trip with our helpful and knowledgeable guide for the drive up to the park.
There were a number of boats of different sizes operating from the jetty and we were quickly loaded on to one and set off up the lake. It did not take long to reach the first of three family groups of hippos we saw on our trip along with a shoal of catfish and various birds. Unfortunately we did not see any alligators. We also did not see the Coelacanth that the guide on the boat claimed was living in the lake, hardly surprising as they are only found at depths of 1500m in the ocean!
On return to the bus the guide drove us to an outdoor market where we were able to purchase some locally produced nicknacks along with the usual selection of mass produced carved hippos, alligators wall hangings etc. One of the group purchased a very large carving of an elephant head which did look quite impressive and stimulated a conversation about how they were going to get it home.
The whole trip lasted well over 4 hours and would have been even longer had we opted to stop somewhere for lunch. Overall a vey good experience and we are quite happy to recommend Under African Skies.

What to expect

We depart Richards Bay and head north to Isimangaliso Wetland Park. Sunscreen and hats on, we’re off on our boat cruise. The boat departs from the Sunset Jetty. After all the excitement of watching hippos, crocs and beautiful birds, it’s time for lunch (own account). Time permitting - we walk off our lunch by visiting the craft markets and take a walk on the boardwalk which leads to the mouth and to the beach. We can dip our feet in the Indian Ocean to cool off from the Zululand summer.
