This is a must do tour if you can! The Irish Loop was beautiful and the tour so informative. Spending time at the Avalon Colony and lunch at the Tetley Tea Room was a highlight. Getting to meet one of the locals - after tasting some yummy homemade muffins - makes this tour quite special. As a solo traveler, I was able to share this experience with others. The tour guide (and trainees) was so wonderful to speak with. By the end of this tour, I felt like it was a road trip with friends.

We decided to do tours instead of renting a vehicle and so glad we did. The 3 tours we did were informative and the drivers, with their stories and knowledge of the area , made the trips very enjoyable. From reserving , to being picked up and the driving around was done professionally and courteous . We got to meet some local people who shared with us their stories and knowledge of the areas we were in, and we thoroughly enjoyed this .
We also recommend these tours with McCarthy's - Outports and Lucky Rocks and Bird Island (with O'Briens Whale and Bird Tours) and the Irish Loop to Ferryland.

We were on a bus tour and part of the package included a 'step on guide' to show us around the Irish Loop. Our bus met the guide at our hotel and we were off.
From the moment he opened his mouth, he spoke in a condescending manner to us, making us feel like school age children, and not adults who were there to learn about the history of the Irish in Newfoundland.
Some of his comments (I wont' even call them jokes) were offensive, and he repeated them more than once.
We stopped at Ferryland and thankfully there was an interpreter there who showed us around the Colony of Avalon. Once back on the bus, I pretended to fall asleep to avoid any contact with him. He commented that, on most tours, people seemed to fall asleep on his tours. I wonder why. Probably, like me, they were pretending to avoid contact with him and being asked to sing a song about a goat..
He had no sense of personal space, got in the faces of some of the men on the bus who were not impressed with him at all.
Now, before you think we didn't get the 'Newfoundland sense of humor' or something along those lines, two days before, we had a marvelous step on guide named Betty show us around St. John's and Cape Spear. She was witty, charming, and shared her knowledge of the area with us in an open and mature manner, while embracing the Newfoundland humor and lifestyle. We all loved Betty.
After the tour to the Irish Loop was done, we made to clear to our bus company that had we known what this man was like, we never would have gotten on the bus. We all felt the same way...so more than 50 passengers were not pleased. We felt it was a wasted day.
Not everyone is cut out to be a tour guide, or in fact, an educator. Delivery and style means a lot.

After a delicious lunch in Ferryland we will continue "Up" the southern shore to Renews, where a local storyteller will welcome us to his hometown and regale us with tales from his time there. He will also invite us in for a proper "Mug Up."
