By far, one if the coolest experiences in Japan! After a whole day of walking and learning the rich history of Hiroshima, my teens were ready for a break. Let me tell you that I thought it would be a kid activity but I was mistaken! We learned so much about the art of traditiinal archery, bow construction and materials, from the ancient 800 year-old design to newer models. Then a full lesson on how to properly hold it and shoot. We wore the uniforms because the kids wanted the full experience and it does make for great photos. Shooting was tough, real deal. But after a few rounds, we got better at hitting the target! Fun and educational at the same time. And our instructor, very calm, patient and knowledgeable. Used Google translate to communicate, but was great. He even took pics and videos for us. HIGHLY recommend!

Informative and fun experience. Perfect for me and my two children aged 11 and 13. We wore the costume and learnt about the proper way to hold and shoot the arrows. We practiced and then had a mini competition. It was fun and the instructor was very knowledgeable.

Easily one of the best experiences in our trip. Teacher did his best to convey the lessons and history of kyudo. He also had small competitions between the party and my family members got quite competitive with each other. Definitely will recommend to do this when you can.

What to expect

Kyudo is a Japanese martial art which consists of shooting at a target with a Japanese bow so as to achieve complete focus in the mind and body. The main difference between kyudo and western archery is that in kyudo every movement follows a traditional routine which pays respect to the equipment and to the opponent. Just a fifteen-minute walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome, this activity allows you to enjoy a genuine Japanese archery experience while in Hiroshima. Upon arrival to the archery range, get kitted out in an authentic kyudo uniform, including dogi upper-wear and hakama lower-wear. Listen to a brief explanation of the art of kyudo and to instructions and demonstrations throughout the experience. With the knowledge and skills picked up, shoot at the target with the arrows, along the way gaining an understanding of the fun and challenging aspects of the sport, particularly those arising from wearing the traditional hakama and armor. Typically in kyudo, you're not allowed to pull the arrow until you master the basics, but during this experience, you'll have the chance to enjoy the real sport even as a complete beginner. It's a bit difficult to hit the target at first, which makes it that much more exciting when you finally do. Hitting the target is also believed to bring good luck and make your wishes come true, even in the mini-sized kyudo ground you'll be shooting in. ・This tour is not recommended for people with limited mobility. ・This activity is suitable for beginners. In rare cases, the strings may hit your arms and wrists and cause swelling. ・If you are more than 5 minutes late for your session, you will not be allowed to enter. ・Translation apps may be used to assist customers. ・Due to preparation time, you will not be able to enter the store before the start time. ・There are no restrooms at the experience store. There are public restrooms nearby. ・Please keep your hands clean. Do not come with hands that have touched food. ・Please remove your shoes. Socks or bare feet are acceptable, but please keep your feet clean. Dirty or smelly feet will stain the floor and cause a nuisance. ・Entry is not permitted for anyone other than the number of people in the reservation.

You'll also understand the fun and challenging aspect of the sport, particularly while wearing the traditional hakama and armor. Usually in kyudo, you are not allowed to pull the arrow unless you master the basics. But during our lesson, you will be able to enjoy the real kyudo experience even as a complete beginner. It will be a great time if you are looking for a nice photo or movie to show to your friends.
