    Our experience with Mahaweli Tours & Holidays and their service 'Second Class Reserved Seats Train by Sri Lanka Railways' was downright disappointing. Instead of receiving our own tickets, we were given a group ticket booked with two strangers. To our surprise, we were suddenly added to a WhatsApp group with these people without any explanation. They were just as clueless and even mentioned that someone else had been in the group chat before, who had become very angry about the same confusing situation. It seems that person eventually got our tickets, leaving us to travel with a cheap group ticket. This meant that we didn't have our own tickets and had to rely on these strangers to enter the train together. Additionally, we paid for seats next to each other, but we ended up sitting on completely different rows, separated from each other. All of this happened because Mahaweli Tours & Holidays wanted to make more profit by buying cheap group tickets, while charging tourists a multiple of the normal price. Of course, we raised our concerns and mentioned that this was unacceptable. We were promised a response with a possible compensation, but unfortunately, we never heard back. In the end, we didn’t get our own tickets, we didn’t sit together, and to top it all off, the train was significantly delayed. I would strongly advise against using Mahaweli Tours & Holidays. They scam you, and you’re better off buying a ticket at the station. The service is the same (which is none), but at least you won’t be overcharged.

    I got airport transfer to Kandy and tickets on the train from Kandy to Ella. The driver from the airport to Kandy was really nice and a safe driver. Good 2nd class tickets on the train where you gaze out of the window. Super quick and friendly to respond when I had questions. Highly recommend!

    Only booked the tickets one week in advance via Booking.com. Expect the train to be late. The tickets were delivered to our hotel.

    2 days before the train departure I had not heard anything yet, so I contacted their company. It took a while before I got a reaction. We got the tickets late on the evening before the day we were scheduled to depart. The site indeed says tickets 3rd or 2nd class, and we were unlucky to receive 3rd class. The price is the same, while on the official site there is a significant price difference. It was a very long and uncomfortable trip on wooden benches with 90 degree angle back of the benches and little space for people to sit. Moreover, the seats for me and my son not even next to each other. Luckily no issues with swapping seats. I understand the tickets are more expensive than when you buy them on the official train website where much harder to get (not the provider's fault, just room for improvement by the Sri Lanka railways). But it feels like being cheated paying the same price and getting 3rd class. The provider told me they get the tickets randomly. So maybe if you order earlier before your actual departure, you might be luckier. Coming from Vietnam (where we live) the trip was not as magnificent as a I expected based on the descriptions, but that has nothing to do with the provider. Probably coming from another country it is worthwhile, but I would not recommend it. The trip from Kandy to Ella was almost 8 hours (as delayed), while by car much faster. It also got a bit cold when we were high up in the hills. If you do take the train, make sure you get 2nd class tickets. Probably also better to take the train for a shorter distance.
