What to expect
Siem Reap
We will leave your hotel early in the morning and drive straight to Battambang Province, passing through the countryside and rural areas along the way. The journey from Siem Reap to Battambang takes approximately 3 hours.
Wat Ek Phnom is an impressive Angkorian temple located about 9 kilometers north of Battambang city, on the left bank of the Sangkae River near the small creek of Prek Daun Taev, northwest of the Peam Aek area. Built in the early 11th century under the reign of King Suryavarman I, this Hindu temple is dedicated to the god Shiva. The temple features a central sanctuary surrounded by the remains of several satellite structures and is known for its beautifully carved lintels and sandstone architecture. Though partially collapsed, it still offers a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Khmer craftsmanship and religious devotion.
Damrey Sor Pagoda, also known as the White Elephant Pagoda or Wat Tahm-rai-saw in Khmer, is a prominent Buddhist temple located in the center of Battambang city, Cambodia. The pagoda is named after the two striking white elephant statues that stand at its entrance, symbolizing strength, wisdom, and royal power in Cambodian culture. This temple is not only a place of worship but also an important cultural site, featuring beautifully detailed architecture, vibrant murals depicting scenes from the life of Buddha, and a peaceful atmosphere that attracts both locals and visitors. The pagoda often serves as a hub for religious ceremonies and local festivals, reflecting the deep spiritual traditions of the region.
The Ta Dumbong Kro Aung Statue is one of Battambang’s most iconic landmarks, located at a central roundabout in the city. The statue depicts a powerful black figure holding a large wooden club across his lap, representing the legendary figure Ta Dambong, or ‘Grandfather Dambong.’ According to local legend, he was a cowherd who gained magical powers from a sacred stick and overthrew a king to rule the region. The city of Battambang is believed to have been named after him, with ‘Battambang’ roughly translating to ‘Lost Stick.’ The statue is not only a symbol of local folklore but also a point of pride for residents, reflecting the province’s rich cultural heritage and mythological history. It’s a popular spot for visitors to take photos and learn about the region’s origins.
Battambang
After spending the morning exploring, we will stop for lunch and rest at a local restaurant in Battambang Province. Afterward, we’ll head to the bamboo train for another unique experience.
Bamboo Train Battambang
The bamboo train in Battambang is a truly unique experience, often referred to as one of the most charming and unforgettable activities in Cambodia. This quirky ride, featured by Lonely Planet, involves traveling on a small, makeshift bamboo platform, powered by a motorized engine. The journey offers a clickety-clack sound as you travel along the old railway tracks through the stunning countryside, passing through lush fields, local villages, and vibrant rural landscapes. The bamboo train was originally used for transporting goods, but now it serves as a popular tourist attraction, allowing you to experience the rural beauty of Cambodia in a fun and adventurous way. It’s an iconic experience that allows visitors to connect with the local culture and history of the area.
Wat Banan Temple
Wat Banan (Khmer: ភ្នំបាណន់) is one of the best-preserved Khmer temples in Battambang Province. The temple is known for its distinctive five towers, which resemble the much larger and more famous Angkor Wat, making it a significant historical and architectural site. Located atop a mountain, visitors must climb a steep laterite staircase at the base, flanked by intricately carved nagas (mythical serpents), adding to the temple’s mystical and ancient charm. The climb offers not only a fascinating journey through history but also stunning views of the surrounding countryside, making it a must-see destination for those interested in Khmer architecture and culture.
The Bat Caves in Battambang Province offer a truly unique and unforgettable experience. As dusk falls, thousands of bats emerge from the caves in a spectacular display, flying in swarms to hunt for food. The sight is both mesmerizing and awe-inspiring, making it a must-see natural phenomenon in the area. Visiting the Bat Caves provides a rare opportunity to witness the wonders of nature in an incredible setting, combining the thrill of the caves with the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Siem Reap
After a full day of exploration and visiting the Bat Cave, we will depart from Battambang Province around 6:00 PM. The drive back to Siem Reap will take approximately 3 hours, depending on traffic. We expect to arrive at your hotel in Siem Reap between 9:00 and 10:00 PM, marking the end of our long, unforgettable day tour.
The experience can be subject to change due to bad weather or unforseen circumstances. We always endeavour to give you the best possible experience.
