What to expect
The Blyde River Canyon, is a 26km long Canyon, the 3rd largest Canyon on Earth, located in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Unlike the Grand and Fish River Canyon, the Blyde River Canyon is a "green canyon" which is dominated by subtropical vegetation.
The Three Roundavels are round, grass-covered mountain tops with somewhat pointed peaks. They resemble the traditional round or oval roundavels or African homesteads quite closely, which are made with local materials. The names of the peaks commemorate a 19th century chief, Maripi, and three of his wives. The flat topped peak adjacent to the roundavels is Mapjaneng, "the chief", who is remembered for opposing invading Swazis in a memorable battle. The Three Roundavels are named after his three troublesome wives – Magabolle, Mogoladikwe and Maseroto.
This natural water feature marks the beginning of the Blyde River Canyon. Through countless eons, the swirling whirlpools which occur as the Treur River plunges into the Blyde River caused waterborne sand and rock to grind huge, cylindrical potholes into the bedrock of the river.
God’s Window offers spectacular views from the edge of the Great Escarpment (Drakensberg) across the Kruger National Park to the distant Lebombo Mountains on the border with Mozambique. This sheer cliff edge stretches relatively unbroken for approximately 250 km, and marks the divide with the Kruger Lowveld region of Mpumalanga.
The Lisbon Falls is a waterfall in Mpumalanga, South Africa. They are located close to God's Window and the highest waterfall in South Africa's Mpumalanga province, Lisbon Falls. They are less than a tenth of the height of South Africa's tallest waterfall, the Tugela Falls, and are better known for their beauty.
The Graskop Gorge Lift is the latest and most innovative tourism development in South Africa and the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Your journey begins as you drop off the grassy cliff top in a custom-designed 26-passenger viewing elevator. It travels 51m down the cliff face into the cool mountain forest below. An extensive network of elevated walkways, suspension bridges and interactive exhibits lead you along the 500m forest trails and across the streams. The site's towering cliffs have been cut back over time by the Motitsi River, with the Panorama Gorge waterfall which plummets 70m into the gorge below.
