Your Itinerary

Mulifanua

This is where you will hop on the inter-island ferry to Savaii. Depending on availability, you will be given Business Class tickets by your guide where you can sit comfortably in the air conditioned area. If you wish to be at the top deck where there is a better view then you will be given a general passenger ticket. The trip will take approximately 80 minutes from Upolu to Savaii and you can get the chance to see the beautiful islands of Manono and Apolima on your left side. If you are lucky then you might also spot a turtle, shark, dolphins or a whale on this trip across the open Pacific Ocean.

Salelologa

This is where the boat will dock and you disembark to meet your guide on the other side that will hold up your name on a board. Disembarking may take a few minutes and then once you meet your guide you shall be on your way and traveling north for 15 minutes. You will see beautiful villages of Savaii and their well manicured lawns as you head to your first stop.

Sapapali'i

This is where you will stop to see and take photos of one of the most significant sites in Samoan history and culture, the landmark of where John Williams and his entourage landed in 1830 bringing Christianity to Samoa. You will also see the tomb of the last king (Tafaifa) of Samoa which is only a few meters across from the landmark.

Saleaula Lava Fields

Stroll across the eerie black landscape of the Saleaula Lava Field and visit the remains of buried villages. Imagine what it must have been like for the locals when they saw their homes swallowed up by the pahoehoe lava. Despite this sad history, the lava field has become one of Samoa’s major tourist attractions, offering opportunities for geologists and photographers alike. It is hard not to be impressed when you see the effects of the terrifying force of nature. The Saleaula Lava Field was created in 1905 when the nearby Mount Matavanu erupted. A second eruption poured yet more lava onto the field, covering an area of over 100 square kilometres (40 square miles). Five villages were buried, although thankfully the lava was slow-moving so there were few fatalities. You can also see the Virgin's Grave at this stop.

The tour was definitely not worth the money paid. I spent $663AUD for 2 people and it was a very rushed tour. Our guide couldn’t make it due to a migraine and whilst Chris was very informative regarding the history and culture, he seemed to want to take shortcuts and end the tour quickly like “turn back so we don’t get caught in the rain”, took us to a different resort that is “closer to the wharf” just to find out his family lived across the road. We did not go to Stevensons nor did we have time to snorkel and enjoy the beach as promised in the advert and in fact when we jumped in the water for 2 minutes, we were asked to leave so we don’t miss the ferry. I asked for 10 minutes in the water and was told “sorry this is our itinerary unless you want to miss the ferry and take the 2 hour ferry back at 4PM. As I said, it seemed like he wanted to get us back before the tour even started. Swimming with the turtles was not enjoyable at all as we had a strict 20 minute timeframe and there was a family with loud children who were tugging and hurting the turtles. Our trip to the lava fields was boring and quiet. The 2 ladies who were asked us down to the virgins grave were more interested in laughing and talking to each other in Samoan than giving us any information at all on our walk. We seemed like a bother to them All in all, not a great experience and spent more time on the tour in transit than sightseeing Savaiis beautiful offerings. Wouldn’t recommend.

This was the best tour we have been on. Chris really knows his country he was so informative such a bubbly, friendly and polite person we had so many laughs. The only reason I give 4 stars is purely because it wasn’t long enough because of the ferry catching otherwise it’s definitely a 5 star I would definitely recommend this particular company if this is your first time to samoa or if you just want the knowledge. fa’afetai lava uso we will see you on the next tour for the other side or Savai’i and I remembered i’a sa not ninja turtle. Lol

Had a great time with Tai and learned a lot about Samoan culture. Was also a great way to see Savaii

I'm traveling with my mum. She's 80 year's old, has mobility issues waiting for a knee replacement, and is a bit deaf so I did check with Tai's Native Experience if they thought this trip might be too difficult for her. I needn't have worried. Chris, our cheerful, knowledgeable, and all round great guide made the trip easy and interesting for us. He couldn't have been more supportive getting mum on and off the ferry, or whenever there were stairs. After an early start, the trip itself was great. We loved the ferry ride, Chris gave us just enough history to keep it interesting, the lava field was an easy walk, and the turtles swam right up to see us. We were lucky enough to be the only 2 people on the trip and Chris happily altered it to suit our interests. It's a long, but stunning day, well worth the cost. Can't thank Chris enough.

Amazing to be able to swim so close with the turtles. Our tour guide was lots of fun and told us heaps about Samoa culture which we really enjoyed. We stopped at a beautiful beach and had the most delicious lunch at this lovely restaurant. The only down fall was the tour ended at 2pm to catch ferry back to Apia, it would of been great to spend more time on the island. Would recommend a longer tour if possible.
