What to expect
Ancient Salona
Salona was a metropolis in Roman times with about 60,000 inhabitants until it was completely destroyed by the Avars, an equestrian people in the 6th century. We will explore Salona on foot. At the entrance I will give you some general information. The entrance fee to the open-air museum is about 10 euros for adults.
Manastirine was already a necropolis in Roman times and later became a Christian cemetery. Here was buried the martyr and city patron of Split, St. Dominius.
Tusculum
The Tusculum was built by Don Frane Bulić, a famous clergyman and archaeologist from Split. He used it as an office and meeting place. Some rooms can be visited.
Biskupska palača
The bishop's palace and the remains of the two cathedrals date back to the time when Christians were allowed to practice their religion freely. Today, only the foundation walls can be seen.
Large urban spa
The Roman baths were used for several hundred years. They were the center of social and cultural life in Roman times.
Pet mostova
The "five bridges" used to belong to a kind of industrial area outside the old city center.
The Porta Caesarea was the capital gate in Roman times. The ruts of the old Roman chariots can still be seen today!
Hram
In the oldest part of the city there are the remains of the forum, a temple and an ancient Roman theater.
Ul. don Frane Bulića 91
The "Cemetery of the 16 Sarcophagi" is a necropolis next to the road leading to the amphitheater. Roman cemeteries were built outside the city walls at that time.
Another basilica and necropolis we will see on the way to the amphitheater. Here were buried 5 martyrs who died in the amphitheater of Salona at the beginning of the 4th century during the persecution of Christians by Diocletian.
Amphitheatre Salona
The highlight of the tour in Salona is the amphitheater. It is relatively well preserved, even though the Venetians removed most of the stones to build their churches in Venice!
The experience can be subject to change due to bad weather or unforseen circumstances. We always endeavour to give you the best possible experience.
