Explore the Jewish Ghetto in the Cannaregio sestiere. Your walking tour will begin near the Ponte dei Tre Archi and pass by one of the three gates to the medieval ghetto of Venice. As you explore the narrow streets of Calle Ghetto Vecchio, you will discover the hidden symbols of the ghetto and learn how the local Jewish community managed to grow and thrive here despite adversities.

Great German Scola

Highlights include Scuola Levantina and several other old synagogues, and crossing the Ponte de Ghetto vecchio, one of the bridges that was closed every night to cut off the Old Ghetto. In Campo del Ghetto you can admire the Italian Synagogue, the Great German Scola, Banco Rosso, and the Venetian "skyscrapers" that were created as a result of the overcrowding of the ghetto. You will also the only remaining of the first three banks in the world, find out where the phrase ‘to be in the red’ comes from and why pawn shops were so important to Jews.

Chabad Of Venice

Of course, you will also hear tragic stories of the Jewish residents who were persecuted and murdered during World War II. Learn about the Holocaust in Italy and see the Stolpersteine (stumbling blocks) and the Deportation Monument. Other points of interest include the special wells and the Chabad of Venice. You will also have a chance to stop at a kosher bakery to try a local snack (at your own expense) and get tips on the best things to see and do in Venice.
