What to expect
This attractive small town nestled at the foot of the Hottentots-Holland mountains consist of an old village. There is also a Blue Flag beach - the Bikini beach. In this location is a South African Naval College, a junior officer training centre adjacent to the old harbor. This harbor town is located about 58 km from Cape Town in the Western Cape Province. This on of the most picturesque locations in Cape Town situated in the north-eastern corner of the False Bay. Take in the amazing views from the top of the Hottentots-Holland Mountains and capture the aerial view of the bay plus the beach.
Grabouw
Another small town along the freeway about 65 km south-east from Cape Town, over Sir Lowry's Pass. This is the commercial centre for the vast Elgin Valley. Look out for the sharks which constitute the small squatter camp in the area. Situated on the Palmiet river in the fertile Elgin valley Grabouw is surrounded by Hottentots-Holland and Groenland mountains to the north. To the south is the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. The surrounding farms offer wine and cider tasting. Brandy tasting and cellar tour is also available from the Oude Molen Distillery which is just outside of town. In the town there is the Elgin Apple Museum which is one of the oldest remaining buildings in Grabouw.
Elgin Valley Honey
Surrounded by dramatic mountains Elgin Valley is a lush large area located in the Overberg region of South Africa. This beautiful valley is about 70 km form Cape town south-east along the N2 freeway. It is just beyond the Hottentots-Holland Mountains. This valley is one of the more highly commercialized agricultural area which produces 60% of the national apple crop. Of late it has had a major shift with an increase in wine production because of its cool climate. Elgin wines and tourism have consequently become significant parts of the valley's economy. Look out for the apple and pear orchards, the greenhouse cut flowers and rose farming.
Hermanus
Explore this small town located on the southern coast of the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Famous for the Southern Right Whales watching during the period June to early December every year. Look out for other whales like the Hump Back whales and the Brides whales as they visit the south African coast in winter for mating. Take a walk on the 11 km walking trail along the coast as you search for an ideal location where from you van view the whales. The cliffs provide an ideal location to view theses gentle giants. The surroundings are as beautiful as the gliding whales and you can easily spend the whole day along the coast. There are several wooden benches where you can sit and have a snack and take a picture of your loved one. Look out for these whales as they glide close to the shore.
This is also one of the best attractions locally with several exhibitions that explains the whaling industry. Declared a national monument in 1970 and currently a Provincial Heritage Site. Explore one of the few fishing harbors in the world that has been conserved intact. Look out for the few the few historic fishing boats along the slopes, indigenous veldkos in old brine tanks. There is also re-established coastal fynbos along the cliffs. At this place also is the Hans Moore Environmental Centre and Boat Shed. Explore the local area with South African Shark Conservancy Centre - Old Perlemon Hatchery. Among the attractions are also the De Wet's Huis Photo Museum which houses a collection of photos depicting historical Hermanus. It also depicts furniture from schoolmaster Paterson and fishing reels and trophies from Bill Selkirk.
Visit this penguin colony with over 3 600 penguins and get up close to these adorable birds. Located in the quaint coastal town of Betty's Bay in the Overberg the Stony Point is home to the African Penguins. Explore Kokelberg Nature Reserve which is considered by many to be the most beautiful Cape Nature protected area. Located 100 km from Cape Town beneath the Kogelberg Mountains on the scenic R44 ocean drive between Pringle Bay and Kelinmonde. The scenic mountain close by and the attractive coastline allows for amazing photos. There is a wide range of birdl ife and the Dasy or the rock hyrax is also a famous sighting at this site. The most popular of the marine cormorants are the White breasted, Bank and Crowned Cormorant.
