What to expect
The Karnak Temple is one of the greatest temples of ancient Egypt and is located in the city of Luxor on the east bank of the Nile. It is over 4000 years old and was dedicated to the god Amun as well as other gods such as Courage and Chonsu. The temple impresses with its enormous size and amazing architecture. The Great Column Hall with 134 huge columns is particularly well known – the largest of its kind in the world. The construction of the temple took several centuries and was continued by many pharaohs. A visit to the Karnak Temple offers visitors the opportunity to discover the grandeur of Pharaonic civilization through the inscriptions, walls and giant statues that survive to this day.

The Memnon Colossi are two huge statues of sandstone, located on the west bank of Luxor, in front of the entrance of the Temple of the Dead of Pharaoh Amenophis III. They date back to the 14th century BC and are each about 18 metres high. Each statue depicts King Amenophis III sitting on his throne, and they were created to guard his temple. The statues became famous for a mysterious sound that seemed to come from one of the statues at sunrise. The ancient Greeks interpreted this as the lament of the Trojan hero Memnon, which is why they called the statues “Memnon Colossi”. Even today, they are among the most important sights in Luxor.

The Valley of the Kings is a famous archaeological site on the west bank of Luxor. It served during the New Kingdom, especially from the 18th to the 20th century. Dynasty, as a burial place for the Pharaohs. There are over 60 tombs carved into the rock in the valley, including the world-famous tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered in 1922. The tombs in the Valley of the Kings are decorated with impressive murals and inscriptions depicting the hereafter and burial rituals, giving a deep insight into the ancient Egyptians' belief in eternal life. The tombs were often hidden to protect them from grave robbers – yet many of them were looted in ancient times. Nevertheless, the Valley of the Kings remains one of the most important sources for understanding ancient Egyptian history and art.

The Temple of Hatshepsut, also known as the Temple of the Dead of Deir el-Bahari, is an impressive temple of the dead on the west bank of Luxor, located at the foot of high rocky cliffs. He was born during the 18. Built by order of the famous Pharaoh Hatshepsut, the dynasty is considered one of the finest examples of ancient Egyptian tomb architecture. The temple consists of three large terraced levels connected by wide ramps. It is richly decorated with reliefs and inscriptions depicting the Queen’s achievements, including her famous expedition to the land of Punt. Particularly impressive is the temple's harmonious embedding in the surrounding nature as well as its unique architectural design, which is clearly different from other Egyptian temples.
