In Orlando West, Soweto, Vilikazi Street, you will the modest house that Nelson Mandela and his family called home from 1946 to the 1990. The museum houses various memorabilia, artworks, awards and honorary doctorates conferred on Nelson Mandela and his family.
3000 people gathered in the dusty square in Kliptown, 1955 to adopt the Freedom Charter which is now the basis of our Constitution. This square has an incredible history and the architecture reflects various elements of the area, politics and the people. it is surrounded by the people who were in making history. The Square, offers both local and International visitors an array of history, shopping, entertainment and accommodation. One can also explore the only Intenational 4 start hotel, with 48 rooms in Soweto.
The Hector Pieterson Memorial Museum opened in 2002, not far from the spot where 12-year-old Hector was shot on the 16 June 1976 during the Soweto uprising. Hector was one of the youths that died in the protest against having Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in local schools.
