Great surf school! The staff are really friendly and make your sessions enjoyable. I was able to not only improve my pop-up but learn some wave theory and make new friends. The beach is beautiful and it was a great place to learn to surf! Highly recommend!

I gifted my family the private surf class for christmas because I learned surfing with Moana too and it was such a great experience that I wanted them to experience it as well. They were two adults and two kids with two instructors ensuring a safe surf with lot of one-on-one time. Thanks to the great team of instructors and Alex, the owner, who was always available for questions beforehand they had a great time and fell in love with surfing, just as i did. So if you want to learn surfing this is the school to go to. The whole team is like a big family which you instantly become a part of and they'll always hold a special place in our hearts. Good times and unforgettable memories.

You simply cannot go wrong with Moana Surf School! We were fortunate to travel all over the place in 2023, and by far, my kids’ favorite was Portugal, and their lesson at Moana Surf School in particular.
We visited Portugal in February 2023 and planned many experiences for the kids, including among others, watching a live soccer match, go-karting in Palmela, mountain biking in Sintra, skydiving in a wind tunnel, and of course, a surf lesson at Guincho’s majestic beach with Moana. When asked what their favorite was, without a doubt, it was surfing!
We are from Boston and were joined by our friends from France and Portugal. In total there were six kids, aged six to 11, and three spoken languages.
We hope the observations below are helpful for others.
PS: Alex, I will be reaching out as we just booked our trip to Portugal next year and would love to have surfing lessons every day if your team can accommodate us!
Outcome: all six kids were able to stand on their board and make it stick. Kids had different levels of innate skill and instructors adapted accordingly. By the end of it, one of the kids was already flipping on the board and ready for a fiberglass surfboard.
Language: kids spoke English, French, or Portuguese. They all felt included, understood, and engaged. They could easily converse with their assigned instructor.
Safety: to me, Guincho in February did not initially equate with a first time surf lessons. However, Alex made us comfortable in his explanation of when we would be in the water, and how we would pair each kid with a dedicated instructor. We had three instructors for the six kids. This worked well both for safety and stamina, as kids rotated on and off the waves and didn’t get tired
Process: they started with a warm-up game of playing tag. The instructors made it fun and the kids were having a blast even just for warming up. They then proceeded to do board exercises on land, and off they went to ride the waves.
Location: Guincho is an iconic windsurf and surf beach. It is a truly beautiful wide sandy beach. Also, there is a nice café right next to the school and onto the beach. Easy to park.
Benchmark: we visited the outerbanks in North Carolina for the summer and arranged for surf lessons. By definition, the waves are entirely different than Guincho, hence not much strength/excitement. However, even though the surf instructors were very nice, they simply could not match Alex's team in energy and ability to gel with the kids. The Moana Surf School is simply operating at a completely different level! Alex knows his business and ensures everything goes smoothly.

Excellent care by the team on site, who must have listened to our needs, and our availability. The on-site team is honest and professional, taking us from one beach to another to look for the best conditions for progress, and not hesitating to cancel a session when the sea is not conducive. Sessions in Portuguese, English and even French (special thanks to Tiago). From Quebec, we had an exceptional Christmas. Muito Obrigado the gang!

What an amazing experience! Alex and his team were wonderful and made sure our family had a great time surfing for the first time. Bernardo was in the water with us the entire time and was great, and really took care of us including our 9 year old! Will def recommend to friends!

I had this class booked with the Salty Pelican Portugal and booked a second class for the next day right after! This is an absolute recommendation for anyone trying to get in touch with the sea or to improve their surfing. The team is super friendly and supportive, they stay with you through the whole session and help you navigate the waves and board so you can focus on your balance without knowing waves from the start. They adjust to your level during the class keeping you learning where you are at.
November is mild and surfable, a recommendation, too!
