It was founded by Henry VI in 1440–41 for 70 highly qualified boys who received scholarships from a fund endowed by the king. Prime Minister past and present including Boris Johnson is an Etonian and so is Prince William, George Orwell, Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston and Bear Grylls.

Old Windsor

Old Windsor. Home of Saxon Kings There was an Anglo-Saxon royal palace in Old Windsor, the predecessor of Windsor Castle. It is mentioned in several charters of King Edward the Confessor’s reign. In 1061, the new Abbot of St Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury was appointed there and consecrated in the parish church. Legends also tell of several other events. The saintly King is said to have cured the blind there.
