Moving to a new country is an exhilarating adventure, filled with new sights, sounds, and experiences. But as the initial excitement fades, many expats find themselves longing for the familiar comforts of home. For me, an Indian expat living in Germany, maintaining a connection to my cultural roots has been essential to feeling grounded and fulfilled. Here’s how I navigate the balance between embracing my new life in Heidelberg and preserving my Indian heritage.

Embracing the New, Remembering the Old

When I first arrived in Germany, I was swept up in the whirlwind of cultural immersion. Everything was new and exciting, from the language to the food to the customs. But after a while, I started to feel a sense of exhaustion. I missed the familiar rhythms of Indian life, the vibrant colors, and the comforting flavors of home. It became clear that I needed to find a way to balance embracing German culture with preserving my Indian heritage.

Living in Heidelberg, I've learned to appreciate the beauty of German traditions, like the Christmas markets and the Fasching celebrations. I enjoy integrating into German society, attending local events, and making friends with my German neighbors. But I also make a conscious effort to maintain my Indian identity. For example, I often wear traditional Indian clothing, like sarees and kurtis, to special events. I also make sure to speak Hindi and Marathi with my family regularly, so my daughter, Leela, grows up fluent in both languages.

Food as a Cultural Anchor

Food is a powerful way to connect with your culture, and it's something I've relied on heavily since moving to Germany. Cooking Indian cuisine in Heidelberg can be a challenge. Sourcing ingredients can sometimes be tricky, and I've had to adapt some of my family recipes to work with what's available. But the effort is always worth it. The aroma of spices filling my kitchen instantly transports me back to my childhood in Nashik, reminding me of my family and my roots.

One of my favorite recipes to make is Misal Pav, a spicy lentil curry served with bread. It's a dish my grandmother used to make for me, and every time I prepare it, I feel a sense of connection to her and to my family history. I've also started experimenting with fusion dishes, combining Indian flavors with German ingredients. For instance, I make a potato and cauliflower curry with locally sourced potatoes and cauliflower, adding a unique twist to a classic Indian dish.

Celebrating Festivals and Traditions

Celebrating Indian festivals in Germany is a way for me to keep our traditions alive and share them with my German friends and family. Diwali, the festival of lights, is a particularly special time. We decorate our home with diyas (oil lamps) and colorful lanterns, and we invite friends over for a traditional Indian feast. I also make sure to explain the significance of the festival to Leela, so she understands the importance of our cultural traditions.

Holi, the festival of colors, is another favorite. Although it's not a traditional German holiday, we've found ways to celebrate it with our friends in Heidelberg. We organize a Holi party in our backyard, complete with colored powder, water balloons, and traditional Indian music. It's a fun and festive way to share our culture with others and create lasting memories for Leela.

Language: The Lifeline to Your Roots

Maintaining fluency in my native languages, Hindi and Marathi, is incredibly important to me. Language is more than just a means of communication; it's a lifeline to our culture, our history, and our identity. I speak Hindi and Marathi with my parents and siblings regularly, and I make sure to read Indian literature and watch Bollywood movies to stay connected to the languages.

Raising Leela in a German-speaking environment presents unique challenges, but I'm committed to ensuring she remains connected to her Indian heritage. I speak to her in Hindi and Marathi at home, and we read Indian children's books together. I also enrolled her in a Hindi language class, so she can learn to read and write in the language. My hope is that she will grow up to be bilingual and bicultural, embracing both her Indian and German identities.

Community and Connection

Connecting with other expats and building a support network has been crucial to my well-being in Germany. Joining the local Indian cultural organization has allowed me to meet other Indian expats in Heidelberg and share our experiences. We organize cultural events, celebrate festivals together, and offer each other support and advice. These connections have helped me feel less isolated and more connected to my cultural roots.

I also participate in expat groups in Heidelberg, where I've met people from all over the world. These groups provide a platform for sharing experiences, exchanging information, and building friendships. It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in navigating the challenges of expat life, and that there are others who understand what I'm going through.

Leveraging Technology to Stay Connected

In today's digital age, technology makes it easier than ever for expats to stay connected to their culture and loved ones back home. I use social media to keep up with news and trends in India, and I video call my family regularly to stay in touch. Online communities and forums provide a space for expats to connect with each other, share information, and offer support.

Leela loves using video calls to talk to her grandparents in India. It's a great way for her to maintain a relationship with them, even though they live far away. We also use online resources to learn about Indian culture and history. There are countless websites and apps that offer information about Indian festivals, recipes, and traditions. Technology has truly made it easier to bridge the gap between cultures and stay connected to our roots.

Creating a Multicultural Home

Creating a home environment that reflects both Indian and German cultures is important to me. I've incorporated Indian art, music, and décor into our home in Heidelberg, creating a space that feels both familiar and unique. We have Indian paintings on the walls, Indian music playing in the background, and Indian textiles adorning our furniture.

My husband, Thomas, has also embraced Indian culture. He enjoys listening to Indian music, trying Indian food, and learning about Indian traditions. Together, we've created a home that celebrates both our cultural backgrounds, creating a rich and diverse environment for Leela to grow up in. Our home is a reflection of our love for each other and our commitment to embracing our differences.
