Traveling with Kids: Balancing Adventure and Routine

As a South African expat living in Germany, married to a brewmaster and raising our spirited daughter, Liesel, travel is in our blood. But traveling with kids? That's a whole different ball game! Over the years, we've learned that the secret to a successful family trip isn't just about ticking off destinations, it's about finding that sweet spot between thrilling adventures and the comforting routines that keep everyone happy – especially Liesel.

Setting Expectations Before You Go

One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is to involve Liesel in the planning process right from the start. Before we even book our flights, we sit down together and brainstorm ideas. I show her pictures of potential destinations, read snippets from travel guides, and let her voice her opinions. This not only gets her excited about the trip but also helps manage her expectations. For example, before our trip to Italy, we looked at pictures of the Colosseum and discussed what it was like in ancient times. We also learned a few basic Italian phrases together. This preparation meant that when we finally arrived, Liesel was already engaged and eager to explore.

It’s crucial to choose activities that cater to everyone's interests. We always aim for a mix of adventure and relaxation. Maybe one day we'll hike up a mountain, and the next, we'll lounge by the pool. We also make sure to prepare Liesel for any cultural differences she might encounter. Before visiting Japan, we talked about bowing instead of shaking hands and using chopsticks instead of forks. It's all about making her feel comfortable and confident in new environments.

Maintaining Routine on the Road

I know, I know, vacation is supposed to be a break from routine, right? But for kids, especially younger ones, routines provide a sense of security and predictability. We try our best to stick to Liesel's regular sleep schedule, even when we're on the road. This might mean saying no to late-night events or choosing accommodations with blackout curtains.

Another essential is packing familiar comfort items. Liesel always brings her favorite stuffed animal, a little lion named Leo, wherever we go. Having a piece of home with her helps ease any anxiety she might feel in new places. We also keep meal times as consistent as possible and always pack healthy snacks to avoid those inevitable hunger meltdowns. A well-fed child is a happy child, after all!

Embracing Adventure and Cultural Immersion

While routines are important, travel is also about experiencing new things! We love finding family-friendly cultural workshops and hands-on experiences to engage Liesel. During our trip to Morocco, we took a cooking class where she learned to make tagine. It was such a fun and interactive way for her to learn about Moroccan cuisine and culture.

We also make an effort to explore beyond the typical tourist hotspots. Instead of just visiting famous landmarks, we try to wander through local markets, visit neighborhood parks, and observe everyday life. This gives Liesel a more authentic glimpse into the heart of a culture. Attending local festivals and events is another fantastic way to immerse her in the traditions of the destination. We once stumbled upon a traditional dance performance in a small village in Spain, and Liesel was absolutely mesmerized!

Flexibility is Key

Let's be honest, even with the best planning, things don't always go as expected when you're traveling with kids. Flights get delayed, attractions are closed, and sometimes, kids just have off days. That's why flexibility is so important. We've learned to be prepared to adjust our schedule as needed and to lower our expectations.

Embracing spontaneity can often lead to some of the most memorable moments. One time, we had planned to visit a museum, but Liesel was just too tired. Instead, we ended up spending the afternoon playing in a nearby park, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. It's also helpful to have backup plans in case activities don't work out as expected. If a museum is too crowded, have a list of alternative options, like a playground, an ice cream shop, or a scenic walk.

Balancing 'Together' and 'Apart' Time

Spending quality time together as a family is a huge part of why we travel, but it's also important to recognize that everyone needs their downtime. We make sure to schedule relaxation and play, allowing Liesel to recharge. This might mean spending an afternoon reading books in our hotel room or letting her play on her tablet for a while.

As Liesel gets older, we're also starting to consider splitting up activities to cater to individual preferences. Maybe Hans and I will visit a brewery while Liesel spends time at a kids' club. It's all about finding a balance that works for everyone. When booking accommodations, we often look for places with common spaces, like a living room or a balcony, where we can each have some individual space.
