Packing for a trip used to be a frenzied affair, throwing everything I might need into a suitcase and hoping for the best. But over the years, as Liam and I have explored more of this beautiful planet, I've realized the impact our travels have. From the carbon footprint of our flights to the waste we generate on the road, every choice matters. That's why I've embraced mindful packing – a philosophy that prioritizes sustainability and reduces our environmental impact without sacrificing the joy of exploration.

The Philosophy of Mindful Packing

For me, mindful packing starts with a simple question: Do I really need this? It's about more than just saving space; it's about reducing our carbon footprint. The heavier our luggage, the more fuel a plane needs to burn, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Choosing to travel light, ideally with just a carry-on, can significantly decrease our impact. It also encourages us to be more thoughtful about our consumption habits, both before and during our travels. By traveling thoughtfully, we minimize our footprint and maximize our positive impact on the places we visit.

Choosing Sustainable Luggage

The first step in mindful packing is selecting the right luggage. I've been on the lookout for brands that prioritize sustainability, and there are some fantastic options out there. Look for luggage made from recycled materials, like recycled ocean plastic, which helps reduce waste and protect marine life. Durability is also key. Investing in a high-quality, repairable bag means it will last for years, reducing the need for replacements. Some brands even offer repair services to extend the life of their products.

Eco-Friendly Clothing Choices

When it comes to clothing, versatility is my mantra. I aim to pack items that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits, reducing the overall volume in my bag. Sustainable fabrics are also a must. Merino wool is a favorite of mine because it's naturally antibacterial and moisture-wicking, meaning I can wear it several times before needing to wash it. Tencel is another great option; it’s a sustainable fabric made from wood pulp that is both soft and breathable. I also look for brands that offer ethically made and refurbished clothing, giving garments a second life and reducing textile waste.

Toiletries: Reducing Plastic Waste

Toiletries are a major source of plastic waste when traveling, but there are easy ways to minimize our impact. I've made the switch to solid toiletries like shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and soap bars. They eliminate the need for plastic bottles and are TSA-friendly, making them perfect for carry-on travel. For liquid toiletries, I use reusable containers that I can refill at home. And don't forget about eco-friendly alternatives like bamboo toothbrushes and natural sunscreen, which are readily available and just as effective as their conventional counterparts.

Essential Eco-Friendly Accessories

No mindful packing list is complete without a few essential accessories. A reusable water bottle is a must-have to avoid single-use plastic bottles. I also carry a reusable coffee cup for those early morning caffeine fixes. Reusable shopping bags are incredibly useful for groceries, souvenirs, or anything else you might pick up along the way. And for charging my devices, I rely on a portable solar charger to reduce my reliance on electricity, especially when I'm off the grid.

Mette's Personal Packing List: A Practical Example

As a landscape and adventure photographer, my packing list is tailored to the demands of my work and the environments I explore. Here are a few of my go-to items:

  • My trusty Fjallraven backpack made from recycled materials. It's durable, comfortable, and has plenty of room for my camera gear.
  • A Merino wool base layer from Icebreaker. It keeps me warm in cold weather and cool in warm weather, and it doesn't retain odors.
  • A Patagonia down jacket made from recycled down. It's lightweight, packable, and incredibly warm.
  • A pair of Blundstone boots. They're versatile enough for hiking, exploring cities, and everything in between.
  • Solid shampoo and conditioner bars from Ethique. They smell amazing and eliminate the need for plastic bottles.
  • My Peak Design camera clip. It allows me to keep my camera easily accessible while hiking, without having to carry it in my hands.

These items are not only sustainable but also incredibly practical, allowing me to focus on capturing the beauty of the landscapes around me.

Minimizing Waste on the Go

Mindful packing extends beyond what we pack; it also includes how we handle waste while traveling. I always bring reusable cutlery and food containers to avoid single-use plastics when eating on the go. Beeswax wraps or biodegradable sandwich bags are great for packing snacks. And when it comes to disposing of waste, I make sure to do it responsibly, recycling whenever possible and avoiding littering.

Supporting Sustainable Brands and Businesses

One of the most impactful things we can do as eco-conscious travelers is to support sustainable brands and businesses. I encourage everyone to research companies with transparent supply chains and ethical practices. Look for accommodations, restaurants, and tour operators that are committed to sustainability. And whenever possible, buy locally made products to support local artisans and economies. By making conscious choices about where we spend our money, we can help create a more sustainable travel industry.
