Andean Majesty Unveiled
Today was a day of immersion into the heart of the Andes, a sensory feast that combined breathtaking vistas with the rich flavors of Peruvian cuisine. It’s days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the world’s hidden gems with you, my dear readers. Forget the Alps for a moment, and let me transport you to the majestic Huascaran National Park.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Chilli Heaven. This quirky little spot was a delightful surprise. The menu, a fusion of flavors, offered everything from spicy curries to comforting burritos – a true testament to Huaraz's diverse culinary scene. I opted for the chicken fajitas, while Hans-Peter enjoyed a flavorful curry. Lila, ever adventurous, tried the cheese sticks, which she declared were 'muy delicioso!'. It was the perfect fuel for our day of exploration.
Fueled and ready, we set off to Mirador Tres Huancas. The drive itself was an experience, winding through the Callejón de Huaylas. The valley unfolded before us, a tapestry of green fields, quaint villages, and the ever-present, snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Blanca. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share such beauty with my family. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of eucalyptus and wildflowers. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way.
As we ascended towards the Mirador Tres Huancas, the landscape transformed. The rolling hills gave way to rugged terrain, and the views became increasingly panoramic. Lila was particularly excited, her little eyes wide with wonder. She peppered us with questions about the mountains, the clouds, and the tiny houses dotting the valley below. It was moments like these that made the trip so special – seeing the world through her innocent, curious gaze.
Finally, we arrived at Mirador Tres Huancas. And what a sight it was! The viewpoint offered an unparalleled panorama of the Andes. The 'tres huancas' themselves – three striking rock formations – stood proudly against the backdrop of the Cordillera Blanca. It felt like we were standing on top of the world. I took out my camera, attempting to capture the grandeur of the scene, but no photograph could truly do it justice. It was a moment that had to be experienced to be believed.

We spent a good hour at the mirador, simply soaking in the beauty. Lila, of course, was busy exploring, climbing on rocks and chasing butterflies. Hans-Peter and I found a quiet spot to sit and reflect. We talked about life, about our dreams, and about how fortunate we were to be sharing this experience together. It was a moment of deep connection, a reminder of the bonds that tie us together as a family.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are the ones where you simply allow yourself to be present, to soak in the beauty around you, and to connect with the people you love.
After our fill of Andean vistas, we descended back into the Callejón de Huaylas, our stomachs rumbling in anticipation of lunch. We decided to try El Fogón, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant had a rustic charm, with wooden beams, exposed brick walls, and colorful textiles adorning the space. It felt warm and inviting, like stepping into someone's home.
The menu was a delightful mix of familiar and exotic dishes. I opted for the *trucha rellena*, a stuffed trout that was simply divine. Hans-Peter, ever the carnivore, chose the *pollo a la brasa*, a grilled chicken that was juicy and flavorful. Lila, surprisingly, ordered the *anticuchos de corazón*, grilled beef heart skewers. She had seen them being prepared and was intrigued. To our surprise, she loved them! It was a proud moment for this mama, watching my little one embrace new culinary experiences.
The Callejón de Huaylas itself is more than just a scenic route; it's a living, breathing testament to the resilience and beauty of Andean culture. As we drove, we passed through numerous villages, each with its own unique character and charm. We saw women in traditional dress, their colorful skirts swirling as they walked along the road. We heard the sounds of music and laughter, spilling out from open doorways. It was a glimpse into a world that felt both ancient and vibrant.
After lunch, we strolled through a local market, eager to immerse ourselves in the local culture. The market was a kaleidoscope of colors, smells, and sounds. Vendors hawked their wares, offering everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. We bought some *aguaymanto* (Peruvian ground cherries) for Lila, a sweet and tangy treat that she devoured with gusto. I also picked up a hand-woven scarf, a memento of our time in the Callejón de Huaylas.
Before heading back to camp, we stopped by Boutique miracle for a quick shopping trip. It was a small shop, but filled with interesting local crafts. Lila found a small alpaca doll that she instantly fell in love with, a perfect souvenir to remember our trip. I bought a beautiful, hand-painted bowl, planning to use it for our *injera* when we get back to Munich, a little piece of Peru in our home.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to our campsite. The sky was ablaze with color, painting the mountains in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. We sat around the campfire, sharing stories and laughter. Lila, tired but happy, snuggled up to me, her alpaca doll clutched in her arms. Hans-Peter, ever the romantic, strummed a few chords on his guitar.
For dinner, we decided to try PAKTA Restaurante. This restaurant was a bit of a drive, located in Carhuaz, but the reviews were too good to ignore. It was a fusion restaurant, blending Peruvian ingredients with international techniques. It was a delightful surprise, a testament to the creativity and innovation of Peruvian cuisine.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post by the light of our campfire, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a day of simple pleasures – of breathtaking beauty, delicious food, and precious moments shared with my family. It’s a reminder that the best things in life are often the simplest.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Túnel Punta Olímpica and Cordillera Blanca [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I'm particularly excited about the tunnel, as I've heard it offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains. But for now, I'm content to bask in the memories of today, grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Huascaran National Park with my loved ones.
And now, as the flames of our campfire begin to dwindle, it’s time for me to bid you goodnight. May your dreams be filled with Andean vistas and culinary delights. Until tomorrow, *de buena noche*!
