A Warm Andean Welcome

After what felt like an eternity in transit, we finally arrived in Huaraz, the gateway to Huascaran National Park. The crisp mountain air was a welcome change from Munich, and the excitement of exploring this UNESCO World Heritage site with Hans-Peter and Lila was palpable. Our first day was all about acclimatizing to the altitude and soaking in the stunning landscapes that awaited us.

Our journey began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Andino. The aroma of freshly brewed Peruvian coffee filled the air, mingling with the sweet scent of local pastries. I savored every bite, knowing that the day ahead would be filled with exploration and adventure. Lila, ever the curious one, peppered me with questions about the mountains, the people, and the llamas she hoped to see. It warmed my heart to see her so engaged and excited about our Peruvian adventure.

After breakfast, we set off towards the jewel of Huascaran National Park: the Lagunas de Llanganuco. The drive itself was a feast for the eyes. The road wound through the Callejon de Huaylas, a valley framed by the towering peaks of the Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra. Quaint villages dotted the landscape, each with its own unique charm and character. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the sheer scale and beauty of the Andes.

As we ascended towards the Lagunas de Llanganuco, the scenery became even more dramatic. The turquoise waters of the lakes shimmered in the sunlight, reflecting the snow-capped peaks that loomed above. The air was thin and crisp, and the silence was broken only by the gentle lapping of the water against the shore.

We spent several hours exploring the shores of Laguna Chinancocha and Laguna Orconcocha, marveling at their beauty and tranquility. Lila was particularly fascinated by the ducks that glided across the surface of the water, their feathers shimmering in the sunlight. Hans-Peter, ever the photographer, captured the stunning scenery from every angle, determined to preserve these memories for years to come.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are the ones that take your breath away, leaving you speechless in the face of nature's grandeur.

For lunch, we stopped at Don Cuy, a local restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. I decided to try the pachamanca, a dish of meat and vegetables cooked in an underground oven. The flavors were rich and earthy, a testament to the ancient traditions of the Andes. Hans-Peter opted for the cuy, or guinea pig, a local delicacy. Lila, however, stuck to a simple plate of rice and vegetables, her adventurous spirit not quite extending to Andean cuisine just yet. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, and the staff were very welcoming. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel after our morning of exploration.

After lunch, we paid a visit to Hecho con Amor, a local shop specializing in handmade crafts. I was immediately drawn to the colorful textiles and intricate carvings, each one a testament to the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I purchased a few small souvenirs for friends and family back in Munich, eager to share a piece of Peru with them. Lila, of course, had her eye on a brightly colored llama toy, which she promptly named Andes.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Huaraz, our hearts full of memories and our cameras full of photos. But before heading back, we had dinner at PAKTA Restaurante. It was an exquisite experience, and I enjoyed the fusion of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine. The restaurant was a delight, with a great ambiance.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Huascarán itself and Campo Santo Yungay. I'm particularly interested in Campo Santo Yungay, as I've read about the tragic history of the town and its destruction in the 1970 earthquake. It's a somber reminder of the power of nature, but also a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

Back at our campsite, as I write this, the stars are beginning to emerge, blanketing the sky in a shimmering tapestry of light. The air is cool and crisp, and the silence is broken only by the crackling of our campfire. I feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible opportunity to share the beauty of Peru with my family. It's a journey that I know we will cherish for years to come.

The weather in Huascaran National Park in October is moderately chilly and humid but cool, with temperatures ranging from 3°C to 17°C. There is a high chance of rain. It is important to pack warm clothes, a raincoat, and rain boots.

Our visit to the Lagunas de Llanganuco was a truly unforgettable experience. The turquoise waters, the snow-capped peaks, and the sense of tranquility all combined to create a scene of unparalleled beauty. It was a reminder of the power and majesty of nature, and a reminder of the importance of preserving these precious places for future generations. It was also a reminder of the simple joys of spending time with family, sharing laughter, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As I reflect on our first day in Huascaran National Park, I am filled with a sense of anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. I know that this journey will challenge us, inspire us, and change us in ways that we cannot yet imagine. And I am grateful for the opportunity to experience it all with the people I love most in the world. The journey to Huascaran National Park was long, but it was worth it.

I can't wait to share more stories and photos from our journey in the days to come. Stay tuned for more adventures in the heart of the Andes!

Until then, Adieu from Huaraz!

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that I forgot to pack extra batteries for the camera and a first-aid kit. I will need to buy these tomorrow in Huaraz before we head to Huascaran.
